Familiarity with the holy things of God can kill.
1Chronicles
13
¶1
And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, and with every
leader.
2
And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, If it seem good unto you,
and that it be of the LORD our God, let us send abroad unto our brethren every
where, that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them also to the
priests and Levites which are in their cities and suburbs, that they may gather
themselves unto us:
3
And let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we enquired not at it in
the days of Saul...
7
And they carried the ark of God in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and
Uzza and Ahio drave the cart.
Most
Bible readers are familiar with the story and the disaster involved. Why did it
happen? What went wrong?
King
David consulted many about the great mission of bringing back the Ark of the
covenant into the city of Zion; it had been left in obscurity for a long long
time. He wisely involved "all the congregation of Israel... our brethren
every where... and with them ALSO to the priests and Levites."
Did
King David inquire of the priests and Levites how that holy and sacred piece of
furniture was to be transported back to Jerusalem?
Did
the priests and Levites instruct the King how the Ark of the Covenant was to be
transported? Or had they forgotten too after such long years of neglect?
I
know not a few giddy-headed sincere folks will mutter, "God acted harshly
against Uzza; his action was with the best intention, and a reflex action
too." Did Uzza know that only the Levites were ordained to transport the
Ark? How did he come to have such familiarity with the Ark?
