Things New and Old

Ancient truths revealed in the Scriptures are often forgotten, disbelieved or distorted, and therefore lost in the passage of time. Such ancient truths when rediscovered and relearned are 'new' additions to the treasury of ancient truths.

Christ showed many new things to the disciples, things prophesied by the prophets of old but hijacked and perverted by the elders and their traditions, but which Christ reclaimed and returned to His people.

Many things taught by the Apostles of Christ have been perverted or substituted over the centuries. Such fundamental doctrines like salvation by grace and justification have been hijacked and perverted and repudiated by sincere Christians. These doctrines need to be reclaimed and restored to God's people.

There are things both new and old here. "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things"
2Ti 2:7.

Not Ashamed of the Gospel of Christ - Why?

 https://www.facebook.com/sing.f.lau/posts/2150136628453
October 30, 2011

This was posted before and many comments were made but the questions are hardly answered. Let's try again. Let's do better this time?
What were Paul's reasons for this confident statement?
What was Paul theological understanding that undergirds this confidence?
Without such theological understanding, would there be such confidence?

Edmund Lau Kok Ming
Paul was confident because it was the gospel of CHRIST. Not the gospel of evangelicals, reformed-labeled folks, anointed-evangelists, megachurches, etc. today. It was supernatural, not human. It was the gospel of GOD justifying the ungodly (an unthinkable thing - and therefore, can only come from God Himself). It was not the nonsense preached today about God justifying the believing. This is the ground of his confidence: the supernatural origin of the unthinkable good news that GOD JUSTIFIES THE UNGODLY.

(A Matthew deleted his comments)

Edmund Lau Kok Ming
Hi Matthew, I don't think you get the point of my comment at all. But I think Bro Sing just explained it very clearly. Once again, a moralist tendency to quickly start talking about sanctification without getting justification right. Of course, the complete gospel of Christ that Paul is not ashamed of is that by Christ, justified sinners are made saints in Christ.

Sing F Lau
The object not ashamed of is none other than the gospel of Christ, not just any gospel of man's imagination, but THE gospel of Christ. So, it is needful to ask the question: what is the gospel of Christ? And there are multitudes of notions if we have wrong notions on this, then there would be reasons to be ashamed

The gospel of Jesus Christ is the good news of the eternal redemption that God has PURPOSED for His elect, ACCOMPLISHED by Christ through His life and death for the same, and APPLIED by the Holy Spirit to each of the elect while they were dead in trespasses and sins.

The gospel is the good news of what has HAPPENED, that is, what has happened all by the free and sovereign grace of the Triune God. Man is completely passive, i.e. he contributed nothing to this good news. If anything, man by nature is in enmity against this good news.

The gospel of Christ is not about great and wonderful possibilities conditioned upon the responses of sinners to the offer of eternal salvation. If that was the case, there would be a whole host of reasons for great disappointment!

Sing F Lau
The gospel is not only the good news of what God has purposed, and what Christ has accomplished BUT ALSO what the Holy Spirit has applied... and this APART and WITHOUT the preaching of the gospel of Christ.

Apostle Paul addressed the Romans - to whom he was writing, and was zealously desirous of preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ - as 'the called of Jesus Christ... beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.' (Rom 1:6-7).

These were THE people Apostle Paul felt indebted to preach the gospel. They were ALREADY' 'the called of Jesus Christ... beloved of God, called to be saints' by the free and sovereign saving activities of the Triune God... BEFORE Apostle Paul brought the gospel to them!

The gospel of Jesus Christ was ALREADY true of them... but they are still ignorant of the good news. And the ministry of the gospel is for their instruction, and edification, and training in righteousness.

The gospel of Jesus Christ will be received and believed by such. To such the gospel of Jesus Christ will be perceived and received as the good news declaring the power of God in saving lost condemned sinners like them.

Apostle Paul was not ashamed because he is assured that the gospel will most certainly be received by those it is intended for! There are ''the called of Jesus Christ... beloved of God, called to be saints' out there by the free and sovereign activities of God that will receive the gospel of Jesus Christ!!!

That being the case, there will be no disappointment whatsoever. It is a product that is guaranteed of reception by the intended recipient!

Sing F Lau
Supposing the application of eternal salvation to a sinner is in some way dependent upon the preaching ministry of the preacher, and the believing responses of his hearers, would Paul be able to say, 'For I am not ashamed of the gospel?'

Sing F Lau
"for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
========
'to every one that believeth': i.e to all believing ones.
These are believing ones BECAUSE the Holy Spirit has applied eternal salvation to them, working the grace of faith in them, thus making them believing ones, capable of believing the gospel of their salvation.

'for the gospel is the power of God unto salvation': To all the believing ones, the gospel of Christ is perceived and received as good news declaring the power of God unto salvation - he purposed, accomplished, and applied eternal salvation for them, all by His free and sovereign grace.

And in this, there is no distinction between the Jew and the Greek.

Everlasting vs Eternal

Everlasting is in the realm of time, the temporal;
it lasts as long as the appointed time last.

October 28, 2019
https://www.facebook.com/sing.f.lau/posts/10214892030429762

#Eternal_vs_Temporal|
#Eternity_vs_Temporality

#Temporality - the state of existing within or having some relationship with time.
#Eternity - a state to which time has no application; timelessness.

Hebrews 5:9 KJV — And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.

Hebrews 9:12 KJV — Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Philippians 2:12 KJV — Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

1 Timothy 4:16 KJV — Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

The salvation which God purposed, Christ accomplished, and the Holy Spirit freely applies to each elect personally (while still dead in trespasses and sins) is the eternal salvation, redeeming them from the eternal damnation in the lake of fire.

Of this gospel of eternal salvation, it is said,

Titus 2 - KJV
11 ¶For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

Those whom the Triune God has freely and graciously saved with eternal salvation are enabled to work out their own salvation; they are commanded to do so with fear and trembling.

How? By "denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ."

May the Lord grant you understanding.

AMEN.

Signs of perilous times!

Pitting red against black, Christ's word against His Apostles'!!!

One David said:
In the Synoptic Gospels, we have records of words spoken by JESUS, Son of GOD, quoted in red ink. The rest of the New Testament are the words of man, inspired by the Holy Spirit of GOD.

The word "doctrine" refers to a body of teachings of a religious, political, or philosophical group, or principle or body of principles that is taught or advocated. Doctrines are thus of man, not GOD.

Apostle Paul was the main character or person who wrote the exhortations in the epistles and wrote the "doctrines" that form the foundations of the "Christian" religion.  (" But thou hast fully known my doctrine". 2 Tim 3:10 ).

Paul's doctrine, inspired no doubt by the Holy Spirit.

But then, JESUS said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples, Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" John 8: 31,32.

JESUS promised, " But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth". John 16:13.

The Holy Spirit speaks to and leads disciples of JESUS even today as to the early apostles. Doctrines are from the apostles, men who lead the ekklesia, now called "church".

But the individual disciple must depend on the Holy Spirit, not man, "to teach you in all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever i have said unto you" John 14:26.

AMEN.

=======

I replied:

Brother David,
I'm neither rude nor harsh. I'm very blunt, so if you don't like my blunt manner... you know what to do. Look for someone with "good words and fair speeches [that] deceive the hearts of the simple." Rom 16:18

What the Apostles taught are the very things Christ Himself commanded them to teach His church. "... teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."  Matt 28:20b.

The Lord Himself taught the Apostles, and they faithfully delivered that body of truth to the saints.

John 14:26 and 16:13 you quoted was specifically addressed to the Apostles... that the Holy Spirit shall bring all things that Jesus taught them to their remembrance, and will guide them into all truth SO THAT that body of truth might be fully and faithfully delivered to the NT church through their inspired writing.

Jude 3 ¶ Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

The Apostles were Christ's official representatives and spokesmen:

1:1 ¶ God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

The words of Christ in red ink is only a very TINY FRACTION of the teaching of Christ during His public ministry. Apostle John declared this:

John 20:
30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

John 21:25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

Do you actually believe this PLAIN and SIMPLE Scriptures: "16 ALL SCRIPTURE is given by inspiration of God, and IS PROFITABLE FOR DOCTRINE, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." 2Tim 3

I'm amazed that there are believers who are impudent enough to put a DIVISION between Christ's red words and the black in the rest of the NT Scriptures!!! That must surely be another indication of the perilous time!!!

David, you and I are on completely DIFFERENT PAGE.

That which is Perfect

https://www.facebook.com/sing.f.lau/posts/10214874829319745
October 26, 2019

Sing, I was in a discussion on I Cor 12:13 and couldn't remember what you had said you believed what was "the perfect" to come. Can you elaborate a bit for me again?

÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷

Let me copy and paste here from a bible study note on the subject:

2. 'That which is Perfect'
a. 'to teleion' - an adjective in its various gender - masculine (teleios), feminine (teleia), neuter (teleion) is used 18 times in the whole of NT. In all its usage, to teleion is never once used to describe Jesus Christ, or heaven, or the second coming of Christ - the common but erroneous interpretations insisted by the charismatics and some others. The plain meaning of the text excludes these baseless interpretations.

- Kindly check for yourself the 18 occurrences in these passages:  Mt 5:28 (2x), 19:21; Rm 12:2; 1Cor 2:6, 13:10, 14:20; Eph  4:13;  Phil 3:15; Col  1:28, 4:12;  Heb 5:14, 9:11; Ja 1:4 (2x), 1:25, 3:2; 1Jn 4:18.

b. 'to teleion' means "having reached its end or destination, i.e. finished, complete, perfect."

- It is used of persons, primarily of physical development, with its ethical import. eg 1Cor 2;6, 14:20.

- It is used of things, referring to attaining its completeness. eg Rm 12:2; Ja 1:4,25.

- In 1Cor 13:10, it refers "to the complete revelation of God's will and ways..." (Vine)

- At the time the epistle was written, 'that which is perfect' was only in a state of merous - only partial and incomplete. But this partial and incomplete thing was in the process of being made whole and brought to completion/completeness. Can this be a reference to Christ or heaven? Can there ever be a Christ or heaven in a partial state progressing towards completion??????? Is Christ or heaven ever in a state of progress???????

- This is a plain and simple description of the progression of the revelation of God. The revelation of God was given progressively (in clarity) and cumulatively (in quantity) until it was completed. The revelation of God was in the process of coming to perfection/completion by the completing of the Holy Scripture. Rev 22:18-

c. "we know in part and we prophesy in part" :

- before "that which is perfect has come", this is the manner of God's revelation. The complete Bible did not drop down from heaven. Nor was it given in parts through just one prophet. It was given in many parts (instalments) through many different prophets. cp Heb 1:1. So also was the NT scripture. No one had complete knowledge, each was given a part of the divine revelation. Combined together, they will finally have the complete/perfect whole.

- When apostle Paul was writing the epistle to the Corinthian believers, the OT Scripture was already completed, but the NT Scripture was being revealed. It was also given progressively and cumulatively, given in parts through various different people, Apostle Paul being one of them. All of them could only know in part and prophesy in part.

- But once "that which is perfect has come" - once we have the completed revelation of God inscripturated, then the completed revelation of God has come. That which is perfect has come. Knowing in part and prophesying in part have fulfilled their divine purposes. The partial manner of revelation, in the process of time, has brought in the completed manner of revelation - the completed Holy Scripture. cp 2Tim 3:16-17.

- When the partial has served its purpose of bringing in the completed, the partial is abolished forever.

d. This truth of the revelation of God is described elsewhere in a similar way:

- 2Tim 3:15-17: "... The Holy Scriptures... all Scripture is God-breathed... that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." The completeness of the Scripture is emphasized.

- Ja 1:21-25: "... the implanted word... be doers of the word and not hearers only... he who looks into the teleion law of liberty..." All these refer to the revealed word of God.

* When Scripture interprets Scripture, we find that the revelation of God is described as that which is perfect and completed. When the full revelation has come with the completed Scripture, the special revelatory gifts (knowledge, tongues, and prophecy), which revealed in part is no longer needed and are abolished.

e. "And now abide faith, hope, love...": even when Paul was writing this letter to the Corinthians believers, he could see that the abolition of the special revelatory gifts mentions in verse 8 was so certain and soon afterwards. These special revelatory gifts were confined to the beginning stage of the gospel age. When all has been revealed, those revelatory means ordained by God is no longer needed, and they are abolished.

- As early as AD 57 (about the time 1Cor. was written) Paul already foretold in the plainest term that these special revelatory gifts shall cease. As far as Paul is concerned, what will abide throughout the gospel age are these three - faith, hope and love, not the special revelatory gifts.

 #Eisegesis #Exegesis

With the former, a man can make the Scriptures to say virtually any fanciful ideas and fables. This can be done with some imagination and speculation.

With the latter, a man is refrained from saying what the Scriptures do not say, even though he may still end up drawing out what's not there.

Exegesis involves labours of study and mental exertion.

1Timothy 5:17 KJV - Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

2 Timothy 2:15 KJV — Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

labour - kopiáō, kop-ee-ah'-o; to feel fatigue; by implication, to work hard:—(bestow) labour, toil, be wearied.

No, kopiáō is not sipping your cups of black coffee, kopi-O, under the grapevines or fig tree.

Look down into any deep and clean well carefully... you may see many things, including your own lovely reflection, among others. One thing is certain, you can draw up only life-nourishing and thirst-quenching water from the well.

Jas 3:11
Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

2Pe 3:16
As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

Eisegesis has its dire consequences to God's children: SHIPWRECK!
1Tim 1
This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;
19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck.

Let us strive to be better students of God's HOLY word; not a few of us have all been guilty of eisegesis along the way; none are exempted from prejudices and baggage.

May the Lord forgive my sins.

You ask for yours if you have any.

Cainianity is still lively in the 21st century

It's a basic mistake to think that Cain and Abel represent the non-elect and the elect lines! Such an idea is OFF from the start; no, they represent God's children who worship Him their own ways, and those who worship Him is His way.

#Cainianity is still lively in the 21st century.

Gen 4
3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

What did Cain talk to Abel about?

What is the significance of the repeated qualification "his brother"?

What do you think?

Adam and Eve had many sons and daughters.
Gen 5:4 "And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters."

Cain was among Adam's children who did worship the LORD but in his own way and not the way THE LORD had appointed.

There are many Cainites in the churches today.

Singlemindedness in the face of the wiles of the enemies

Be focussed, don't be distracted

https://www.facebook.com/sing.f.lau/posts/10212577608730666
Lord's Day - 21 Oct 2018

The church was blessed with the ministry of the word from two Brothers of the church. The first message was on Nehemiah 6; the second, a topical message on the subject of Death. The Lord has blessed these two Brothers to minister to the saints assembled. Amen.

The message on Nehemiah ministered to my soul as an undershepherd of the Lord - I was aptly reminded of the need for the spirit and wisdom and resolve of Brother Nehemiah in the ministry. Amen.

Neh 6:1-19
Singlemindedness in the face of the wiles of the enemies

Introduction
- the historical setting: Nehemiah the cupbearer of King Artaxerxes; given the royal permission to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem.

1. Facing the onslaught of distractions
- Sanballat and Gershem engaging Nehemiah to distract him from the work, to do him mischief. Examples abound.
- "I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?"
- He would not be distracted from the great work the Lord has committed to him, it must continue at all costs.
- Nehemiah remains resolute despite the continuous onslaught of the wiles of the enemies.
- "Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, QUIT YOU LIKE MEN, be strong."

2. Confronting lies and accusations
- " It is reported..." this, and this, and that, blah blah.
- They want to make Nehemiah fearful, to stop the great work to arm-twist Nehemiah to dialogue with them.
- "There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart." Expose their lies. Lying and accusing like their father the devil.
- Resist the devil. Nehemiah turns to the Lord, "Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands."
- Instead of being weakened by the enemies he sought the Lord's strength.

3. Resisting the snares of cowardice
- "... let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee."
- Shemaiah is an enemy planted within, " for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him" along with many others to speak against Nehemiah.
- "Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me"
- Scandalize the leader and discredit and ruin him is the scheme of the devil.
- Jas 4:7 "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." Resist the temptation to scandalize you, to discredit you as a coward!
- The nobles of Judah were pledging their loyalty to the enemies of Nehemiah for political reasons, and not to the Lord. These sorts are common in churches!

These points were appropriately fleshed out with apt and vivid illustrations to bring home the lessons for us.

O LORD, instill in us the spirit of Nehemiah in these perilous times. Amen.

Is John 3:16 Prescriptive or Descriptive?

A Greek Scholar and a Village Bumpkin on John 3:16

A Village Bumpkin inquires:
Dear brethren, someone who is proficient in Greek, could you please parse the various verbs used in John 3:16. I am also wondering is John 3:16 a declarative statement about salvation or a proposal or invitation or offer for salvation?

Desiring to learn.

A Greek Scholar replies:
Dear Brother, there are five Aorist verbs and one present tense participle in this verse. Among the verbs, there are three indicative moods and two subjunctive moods. The active subject of the first two Aorist verbs is God. God loved, God gave His Son. God's love for the world is the cause for God giving. The subject of the third Aorist verb is the believer (the one believing HE shall not perish).

The indicative mood verbs state a completed act in the past by God - God loved, God gave. The Greek preposition "hina" indicates a purpose clause that grammatically defines the purpose for God's actions. Hence, what God did was for a stated purpose. The subjunctive mood verbs define the purposes "might not perish" but "might have eternal life." Grammatically, the present tense participle introduced by the "hina" preposition defines the single condition for obtaining the two subjunctive verb purposes for God's action.

John 3:16 is a PROVISIONAL ACTION taken by God for the purpose to obtain one positive and one negative stated purposes CONDITIONED upon one action by man - believing.  If you think this is poor exegesis then consider the statement Jesus uses to introduce verse 16. Verse 15 is intended by Christ to be used as a basis for what he is saying in verse 16.  God PROVIDED Israel with the brazen serpent so that if anyone looked upon it they MIGHT NOT perish. Again this text indicates PROVISIONAL ACTION by God based upon one condition (LOOK) in order to possess life and avoid death.

The following verses (vv. 17-21) list reasons why men will NEVER of their own accord partake of this provision.  This determined resistance is the reason Jesus opens up this section by the need of the NEW BIRTH (vv. 3-7) and the Sovereign work of the Holy Spirit (v. 8).

I personally believe that John 3:16 states God's purpose for giving His Son as a PROVISION for the world conditioned upon believing IN ORDER to obtain life and avoid death. I use it as an invitation without reserve and yet at the same time I point out the fact that those listening will never partake of that provision due to their sinful nature which God must first deal with by the new birth according to His sovereign will.

There is no such thing as unregenerated believers nor regenerated unbelievers. The Greek Grammar in I John 5:1 demands that the new birth and believing are simultaneous actions in regard to chronology but that new birth precedes belief in regard to logic.

=======

Village Bumpkin replies:

John 3:16
"For God so loved (aorist active indicative) the world, that he gave (aorist active indicative) his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth (present active participle) in him should not perish (aorist middle subjunctive), but have (present active subjunctive) everlasting life."

I checked the information here: https://www.blueletterbible.org/kjv/jhn/3/16/t_conc_1000016

I may not be Greek proficient, but I am endowed with a fair share of common sense. Consider your statement:

"John 3:16 is a PROVISIONAL ACTION taken by God for the purpose to obtain one positive and one negative stated purposes CONDITIONED upon one action by man - believing."

What is the use of God making such a great provision of eternal life in His Son Jesus Christ for those dead in trespasses and sins, who are in enmity against God, and completely incapable of believing? Didn't Christ state categorically, "Except a man be born again, he CANNOT... he CANNOT...?" Life precedes the activities of that life; the giving of eternal life must precede the act of believing." You don't need any Koine Greek or Classical Chinese to know that, do you?

Common sense tells me that John 3:16 is a declaration of "God so loved..." that He gives eternal life to sinners dead in trespasses and sins, and the evidence/manifestation of God having "so loved" is the believing ones in Jesus Christ.

If God had only offered eternal life, OBVIOUSLY to those don't have eternal life yet, to those dead in trespasses and sins, calling them to believe in order to have eternal life, THEN God had NOT loved at all, much less "so loved." It is the reverse, offering life to the dead on the condition that the dead perform an act to get that life IS A WICKED DEED, it is mocking the dead, it is taunting the dead, it is not loving, it is cruel.

What if I tell you, "whoever eats have life," will you take it as a statement of fact about the whoever eats, or will you take it as an offer of life to the dead on the condition that he, the dead, eats?

HOW STUPID [i.e. lacking common sense] CAN ONE GETS!

===========

Ante Zivkovic
Lol. Now no longer can they even determine is something is prescriptive or descriptive, but rather, it’s both. They do this with everything. New birth precedes believing, yet it is simultaneous. But I see this stupidity outside Christianity too.

#Abigail_vs_nabalism

A love story so overwhelming and convicting that the man loved suffered a massive heart attack!

This question was asked,
"Why did God bless the woman's disrespect and rebellion in 1 Sam 25:10-19?"

It stirred and provoked me not a little. Here is a question on the epic story of Abigail's love and devotion to Nabal, her foolish and brutish husband.

Here is the passage:
1Samuel 25
10 ¶And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.
11 Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not whence they be?
12 ¶So David's young men turned their way, and went again, and came and told him all those sayings.
13 And David said unto his men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the stuff.
14 ¶But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed on them.
15 But the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields:
16 They were a wall unto us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.
17 Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.
18 ¶Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses.
19 And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.

Let’s recapitulate the main facts:

1. The Main Characters
a. Nabal, he was introduced as “the man was very great…” He was very great in wealth only, poor in character.
- “… him that live in prosperity (v6), He held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king.” (v36)
- “… the man was churlish and evil in his doings” (v3). Churlish means rude in a mean-spirited and surly way.
- " for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him." (v17)
- It's never easy living with a husband like that; not a few wives would secretly wish him dead and gone and inherit the wealth!

b. Abigail, Nabal’s wife: “she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance.” Wisdom and beauty and discretion are a *RARE* combination in a woman. Blessed is the man with such a wife.
- Likely, much of Nabal’s wealth was built up through the good sense of his wife.

c. David and his men: they were instrumental in protecting the flocks and men of Nabal.
- 15 But the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields: 16They were a wall unto us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep"
- Thus, in no small ways, they contributed to the prosperity of Nabal.

*2. The Occasion*
a. Sheep shearing season: “… and he (Nabal) was shearing sheep in Carmel.”
- The sheep shearing season was a time of rejoicing, a time when goodwill; kindness, and generosity tend to abound, like during the harvest season.
- “… we come in a *good* day.” (v.8)

b. David sent some men to Nabal with clear and specific instructions:
- Benediction of peace: “Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast.”
- A humble reminder of the crucial service rendered by David and his men to Nabal's men and flock  (v15,16)
- Presenting the *humble request* for whatever provision Nabal is willing to give his men; “give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy son David.”

*3. The Subsequent events*
a. Nabal’s railing at David’s men, and mocking and humiliating David. (v10-11)
- This incident was witnessed by some of Nabal’s good men.
- One of them informed Nabal’s wife, Abigail, about the matter, and warned her of the evil consequences. (v14-17)

b. David’s humiliated men related the incident to David, who, in a fit of rage and righteous indignation, determined to destroy Nabal and all his. He summoned his soldiers for action.

c. Abigail's decisive actions:
- Abigail DID NOT do the many things that some women, who see themselves as better and smarter, are tempted to do in such circumstances, just the perfect occasion to vent their discontent and grudges against the man; they would probably latch on to such an opportunity to rail at and run down their husband for his "nabalism."
- " Oh, you bloody fool... Always the same... Never learn... tight-fisted, loveless tyrant... blah... blah... blah... you bloody swine deserved to be slaughtered and roasted for your heartlessness..." - hurling all sorts of abusive names at him, thinking to show him all the disrespect he justly deserved.
- The Scripture informs us what she did, "18 ¶Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses. 19 And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal”
- But she told not her husband Nabal. Not yet, but later she would. She has prudence and discretion.
- She quietly made haste to cover the great evils of her husband and to urgently pacify the righteous wrath of a warrior humiliated and taunted without just cause.
- See how earnestly she pleaded for the life of her husband, ready to take the blame for the folly and wicked deeds of her husband. "... Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be," (v24). Please forgive my husband for his grievous offences.
- The only appearance of disrespect is her truthful confession of the characters of her own husband, v25. This is far from being disrespectful of her husband; this was a truthful admission of wrong in order to plead mercy for her own husband's life. Yes, he was a pig that deserved to be slaughtered but that pig was her very own husband whom she loved dearly, and she bravely begged and pleaded for that pig that was her own husband.
- See how wisely she reasoned with David not to shed blood, not to stain his good name!
- Mission accomplished. Her own foolish husband is saved from slaughter. She went home quietly but rejoicing in her heart and soul, ready to whisper to her husband the great tidings of deliverance accomplished for him.

4.  Abigail narrated the life-saving story to her husband
a. But there was great feasting at home. "And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. (v36).
- It would not surprise me if she, being a good woman and wife, did give herself completely to relish her husband, the one she had saved from the brink of destruction, on that night of feasting and merriment.

b. Next morning... "But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.”
- Being a faithful, devoted, and respectful wife, she felt the just duty to inform the husband what she had done and accomplished, the resources expanded in order to appease the wrath of the justly offended benefactor in order to save her very own dearly beloved husband.
- The sweet story of her heroic act to save her husband was so powerfully moving, so overwhelming, and convicting to him - in contrast to his own folly and stupidity - that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.

And here is the question: "Why did God bless the woman's disrespect and rebellion in 1 Sam 25:10-19?"

5. The question presupposes two things:
i. That there are disrespect and rebellion on the part of Abigail against her own husband Nabal - who was indeed a churlish, ungrateful, and tight-fisted man;
ii. That the Lord God of heaven blessed Abigail's disrespect and rebellion against her own husband.

Maybe these are not intended but the words in the question necessarily imply what I have just stated.

(i) How can anyone reads the brave acts of Abigail as disrespect and rebellion against her husband Nabal, I know not. Someone may want to ask Abigail when he gets to meet her in glory; no, I'm just kidding.

Search and dig all one can, he won't find one iota of disrespect and rebellion on the part of Abigail towards her own husband, or to other men. To say otherwise is groundless, and bearing false witness

Her acts were the expression of great love for and devotion to her very own husband, EVEN a foolish husband, to save him from being justly slaughtered for his impudence and ungratefulness. See how she earnestly pleaded for the life of her own husband, though a foolish one. Does that indicate somewhat her love and devotion to her husband?

It is somewhat unkind to see her love and devotion to her own husband as disrespect and rebellion. What has bewitched such seers!

(ii) Also, to say that God blessed her disrespect and rebellion is actually bearing false witness against the Lord, that He would bless those evils - disrespect and rebellion - which He has plainly condemned.

6. The Lord did judge the foolish and ungrateful and tight-fisted man, "...that the LORD smote Nabal, that he died.”

Conclusion
Let a woman wait for the LORD to smite her foolish, brutish, unbearable husband dead; until then, honour him and desire his good, despite all his shortcomings.  Amen.

Follow the true Abigail, not the Abigail of one's own imaginations. And let every God-fearing wife say a hearty, "Amen."

He who has ears to hear, let him hear. Amen

The Master said, FEED My Sheep! Hear that?

The Master said, "FEED My Sheep!"
Do you understand the simple command?

FEED My Sheep! Hear that?

A Calvinist teacher quoted, in advocating the free offer of the gospel to all, quoted C.H. Spurgeon: "As Spurgeon observed, show me the elect and I shall preach only to them."

Spurgeon must be suffering from a severe bout of gout when he reasoned thus. And the quoter is similarly unsound!

Does a preacher even need to personally know who exactly are the elect in order to know that his preaching of the gospel is only relevant to God's children, i.e. those elect that has been effectually called out of their state of sins and death to that of grace of righteousness and eternal life?

Supposing you are given a truckload of hay by the Chief Shepherd and is commanded to go and feed His sheep, don't you already know that your work is to feed the sheep, and not entertain the goat; don't you know that your work is relevant ONLY to the sheep, and not the goats?

But you protest, how can I distinguish the Shepherd's sheep from the Devil's goats*... they all appear the same to me! But the Shepherd's sheep and the Devil's goats will distinguish themselves under the sound of the gospel. (Just as dust and iron filings shall distinguish themselves in the presence of the magnetic field!)

Only the sheep are capable of hearing, calling, and believing - all these are spiritual activities, performed by those that possess spiritual/eternal life. 'Whosoever believes has eternal life' - this is a statement declaring a fact.]

Does a preacher even need to know who particularly the elect are for him to know that he has been sent to FEED the sheep? And what has gone into his head to make him think that he has been sent with the hay to turn goats into sheep? Pure milk and meat are for the living... not for bringing lives to the dead. Hay is not for turning goats into sheep!

The Lord sends His servants to FEED the living... God's elect that has been regenerated.

How woolly can new school Calvinists get?
As woolly as their close old-school Arminians cousins!

In preaching, in the nature of the case, the preacher indiscriminately addresses all the hearers present. He proclaims the good news of the salvation that God has accomplished for His people in Christ Jesus and applied personally to the elect by the Holy Spirit.

The preacher knows that the gospel is only relevant, and good news to such, and no one else. What he has is relevant only to the sheep in the audience, the gospel is good news to them. To others it is foolishness.

1Cor 1:18 "For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."

Flea-infested Universalism

Where did you get that infested beast from?
Where else? The flea market, of course

A universalist believes that Christ died for all to make all saveable, and therefore logically and consistently believes these things:
1. That the gospel call applies to everyone in the audience,
2. That faith is the duty of every sinner,
3. That the gospel "offers" Christ and salvation to all. without distinction,
4. That the gospel offer of divine mercy is free and universal,
5. That the saving grace in Jesus Christ is common to all, and
6. That God has the same saving love for the n… See More

I have read about universalists that they don't interpret scripture very well. In this short passage, Paul writes to the Elect; it clarifies many misinterpretations:

“And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins, wherein in times past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. Among these also we all had our manner of living in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ (by grace ye are saved), and hath raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God-not by works, lest any man should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath beforehand ordained, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:1-10

Universalism, Intellectualism, and Relativism, all three are conjoined triplets in the same buggy being towed by a hellbent stubborn mule. The results being humanitarian and social ignorance attempting to produce social order and prosperity with a magic wand.

 William
wonder what you all would have to say if you weren't being critical of someone. It would be nice to hear some encouraging words of exhortation. Help me to increase my knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Sing F Lau
I am PRO-truth, and because I am pro-truth, I am critical of opinions that do not match the truth, as I understand it, of course.

4:1 ¶ I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

Reprove and rebuke... exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine!
How can one fulfill the charge of reprove and rebuke without being critical of errors?

Knowing the errors helps the believers to discern the truth better! It is woolly-headed who can't distinguish errors from truth!

Benjamin
Brother William, No personal attack or individual offense intended on my part.
However having experienced first handed the destructive power of these things, "Universalism, Intellectualism, and Relativism."

I feel obliged to speak out against them, else I'm guilty of what would be called leaving a pitfall covering to a bottomless pit called indifference.

Skeptics, I love'm, reason, once they know the truth, you and ten wild horses couldn't separate them from the truth.

There is a higher love than what the world claims as to their standard, you know the one that says, "I love as long as it is convenient."

I don't claim to be a prophet, priest, or soothsayer, I've experienced teachers and ear-tweakers, I prefer the teacher.

I do agree with you, the Gospel is God's love letter to His bride, the Church, no otherwise idle time could be spent better among them than sharing the gospel, peacefully. 😉

"3 Apples that changed the World"

Only one that Eve ate
changed the destiny of mankind.

October 15, 2011

This meme has been making its round in the cyberspace, and I have seen it many times. So, I thought I would comment on it.

“3 Apples that changed the world:
the one that Eve ate,
the one that fell on Newton's head,
... & the one that Steve built"

I don't know who the author is but so many are happy to pass it around, maybe just as a joke. Sometimes hard truth is stated unconsciously in the jokes.

Concerning the joke above, it indicates that people actually believe Eve eating the forbidden fruit story - maybe only when they make jokes.

Eve and her eating the forbidden fruit presupposes the factual and historical creation, and the subsequent fall of mankind in his representative head, Adam. (Afterall, both Newton and iSteve are historical realities too)

Many would hate and curse if the IMPLICATIONS - of Eve eating of the forbidden fruit and then giving it to Adam to eat - are spelt out!

Actually, Eve eating the fruit did not change the world. It was Adam eating the forbidden fruit that changed the world.

Here it is, stated plainly in Romans 5:
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
14 Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.
17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one, the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Steve Jobs ended with iDied.

Jesus Christ ended with iLive.

And Eve, the 'mother of all living' points us to Him who declares, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live."
