Things New and Old

Ancient truths revealed in the Scriptures are often forgotten, disbelieved or distorted, and therefore lost in the passage of time. Such ancient truths when rediscovered and relearned are 'new' additions to the treasury of ancient truths.

Christ showed many new things to the disciples, things prophesied by the prophets of old but hijacked and perverted by the elders and their traditions, but which Christ reclaimed and returned to His people.

Many things taught by the Apostles of Christ have been perverted or substituted over the centuries. Such fundamental doctrines like salvation by grace and justification have been hijacked and perverted and repudiated by sincere Christians. These doctrines need to be reclaimed and restored to God's people.

There are things both new and old here. "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things"
2Ti 2:7.

The Lord is not willing that any should perish and #70AD

The Lord is not willing that any of His children among the Jews,
the specific audience the Apostle Peter is addressing,
should become unbelieving and perish
in the prophesied destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD,
but that all should come to repentance.

 2Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

“The Lord is not willing” necessarily put this will of the Lord in the realm of providence and temporal salvation, involving the actions of His redeemed people; His will is eternally and immutably fixed in the realm of His decrees and eternal salvation. There is neither room nor need for the Lord's willing in time concerning the eternal salvation of His elect.

The perishing or not perishing (i.e. being saved from the perishing) is conditioned upon repentance and faith exercised by His redeemed people; that's clearly temporal salvation.

None, no, not even a single of the Lord's redeemed will perish in His second coming. The second coming has to do with the eternal salvation of God’s people, their glorification and entering into their eternal inheritance.

Christ said, "For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day." John 6:38-39.

Romans 8:29-30 declares the same truth, "For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified."

1Peter 1
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you.

Their repentance and faith through the ministry of the Apostles would most certainly save them from being slaughtered and roasted by the Roman armies in the fiery judgment prophesied by Christ in Mt 24.

May the Lord grant you understanding. Amen.
