Things New and Old

Ancient truths revealed in the Scriptures are often forgotten, disbelieved or distorted, and therefore lost in the passage of time. Such ancient truths when rediscovered and relearned are 'new' additions to the treasury of ancient truths.

Christ showed many new things to the disciples, things prophesied by the prophets of old but hijacked and perverted by the elders and their traditions, but which Christ reclaimed and returned to His people.

Many things taught by the Apostles of Christ have been perverted or substituted over the centuries. Such fundamental doctrines like salvation by grace and justification have been hijacked and perverted and repudiated by sincere Christians. These doctrines need to be reclaimed and restored to God's people.

There are things both new and old here. "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things"
2Ti 2:7.

Being justified freely by his grace

"Being justified freely by his grace
through the redemption
that is in Christ Jesus."

Romans 3:23 - KJV
"Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus."

Romans 8 - KJV
33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.
34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Those whom God HAS JUSTIFIED freely by His grace "can never fall from the state of justification."

This gospel truth is beautifully summarised in the 5th paragraph of 1689.11 -
"God doth continue to (o) Forgive the sins of those that are justified, and although they can never fall from the state of (p) justification; yet they may by their sins fall under God's (q) Fatherly displeasure; and in that condition, they have not usually the light of his Countenance restored unto them, until they (r) humble themselves, confess their sins, beg pardon, and renew their faith, and repentance."

Why are those whom God has justified freely His grace can never fall from the state of justification? Very simple indeed; no human factor whatsoever was involved in their justification: the BASIS is solely Christ and His active and passive obedience (i.e. "the redemption that is in Christ Jesus") alone, and the MANNER is solely by God's free grace alone. Faith on man's part is emphatically and repeatedly fenced off and jealousy excluded.

Read it again. Why are the RBs so obtuse? What has bewitched them? The devil has so subtly substituted this wonderful truth with the lie of sola fidei - introducing a fickle human factor into the equation of the justification of condemned sinners by God.

What has gone wrong with this generation of Bible readers!

A man taught this nonsense and many rejoice with him!
- Nicodemus was spiritually dead when he came to see Christ,
- Nicodemus' ignorance of a spiritual truth is proof of his spiritual deadness.

What has gone wrong with this generation of Bible readers!

=======
Nicodemus would probably be welcome at any church today. He seems like an ideal member—principled, knowledgeable, morally upstanding, courteous, and humble. However, Nicodemus had two big problems despite all of that outward religious appeal: first, he was blind to the truth, and second, he was spiritually dead.

The man was lost. That is, he did not have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. As a Pharisee, Nicodemus adhered to strict Jewish codes and laws, so he was certainly religious. But the problem of the lost person is not attitudes, conduct, or even character. We can change and control those things through sheer determination, and many folks do. What people really need is a change of their basic nature. We come into this world with a natural “bent” away from God.

Jesus explained to the observant rabbi that all his outward goodness couldn’t erase, replace, or change his nature. Instead, every person who desires to serve God must be born again. The Lord promised that if Nicodemus received Him as Savior, then he would enter into a brand-new life. His old sinful nature would be transformed so that he could have a real relationship with God. Instead of appearing to be a religious man, Nicodemus would be a true believer.

No one gets into heaven on the strength of good works and kind behavior. When we stand before God, the only thing that will matter is whether our old sin nature has been replaced. We want to show Him the living Spirit we received when Jesus came into our life.
=======

What a pack of lies is being taught! Are you discerning enough to point out some of them? Thanks.

Here's the passage referenced: John 3
1 ¶ There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Marty Hoskins
"The Lord promised that if Nicodemus received Him as Savior, then he would enter into a brand-new life." Wow, the author must have gotten that OUT of the Bible cause it ain't nowhere in mine. That is called "adding to the word."

Joey Candelaria
"and second, he was spiritually dead."
-----
Verse 2 declared that Nicodemus is spiritually born again. Uninformed humble scholar about regeneration: Nicodemus!

Sing F Lau
It is said of Nicodemus:
"The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him."
Is this a description of a spiritually dead man?
Is a spiritually dead man capable of
-- doing what Nicodemus did,
-- knowing what Nicodemus knew, and
-- saying what Nicodemus said?
If Nicodemus was indeed a spiritually dead man, which God did he know and speak of?
Let us hear some answers!

Sing F Lau
What was Jesus' response to Nicodemus' perception of Him as a teacher come from God, and that His miracles were through the divine power of God (in verse 2)?
Did Jesus say Nicodemus was spiritually dead? Did Jesus say Nicodemus was blind to the truth? Or did Jesus actually explain why Nicodemus perceived such spiritual truth?

Here is Jesus' response or explanation to Nicodemus' perception of Him as a teacher come from God and doing those miracles through divine power: "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

What is Jesus saying? Nicodemus' perception of spiritual truth concerning Jesus, his ability to see the kingdom of God is DUE TO THE FACT that Nicodemus has been born again. Without the new birth, such is wholly impossible!
Nicodemus' ability to perceive spiritual truth is because he has been born of God... literally born from above!

His spiritual birth by God through His Spirit explained why Nicodemus could see/perceive the truth concerning Jesus!!!

Nicodemus is born of God... he is not spiritually dead.
Nicodemus perceived the truth concerning Christ... he is not blind to the truth! Yes, he may be ignorant of the truth concerning the new birth.

Charles Dohring
I agree with Sing. Rom 3:11 says none that ... seeketh after God. So by seeking Jesus Nick was not dead.

Charles Page
He said, "we know" - implying this was not a single opinion by Nicodemus but a consensus of many of his friends. The rich young ruler was also born again.

The gospel in a nutshell

The gospel in a nutshell:
Jesus Christ:
- the only begotten Son of the eternal God, appointed as the Substitute of His people, those whom God had chosen in eternity and given to Him as their Redeemer
- lived the perfect sinless life they cannot live, died the death they deserved to die, and rose for their legal justification;
- secured the necessary righteousness for their vital justification by the free and sovereign grace of God;
- bore upon Himself their sins and suffered the full condemnation and guilt in their stead;
- The Spirit of God applies the eternal salvation to each of the redeemed of Christ, at God's appointed time when they are still dead in trespasses and sins;
- such are then called upon to believe the gospel, the good news of what the Triune God HAS DONE to save them; their faith/believing evidence them as HAVING BEEN SAVED, freely by the Triune God.

That's the good news, the saved are called the believe the truth of the salvation by God's free grace in Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:18 KJV — For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

2 Corinthians 2:15-17 KJV —
15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

1689.28 - the institution of the two ordinances by Christ

The Institution of the Two Ordinances in the Church. (1689.28)

a. Chapters 28-30 belong together. They deal with the two church-ordinances instituted by Christ in His church. This chapter differs drastically from chapter 27 of the WCF. The five paragraphs have been turned into two brief paragraphs in the 1689 CoF.
- There are many 'ordinances' mentioned in the Scriptures. God has ordained many things in human affairs - eg. marriage, civil authority, etc. But there are only two church-ordinances instituted by Christ Jesus in His church.

1689.28.1: Baptism and the Lord's Supper are ordinances of positive and sovereign institution, appointed by the Lord Jesus, the only lawgiver, to be continued in his church to the end of the world. Matt. 28:19,20; 1 Cor. 11:26
1689.28.2: These holy appointments are to be administered by those only who are qualified and thereunto called, according to the commission of Christ. Matt. 28:19; 1 Cor. 4:1

1. The Institution of the Two Ordinances in the Church
a. The number and order of these two ordinances in the church:
- “Baptism and the Lord's Supper are ordinances…”
- The number is two; there are only these two ordinances instituted in the church by Christ, the Head and the lawgiver of His church.
- The order is baptism first, then united with the church as a member, and only then eligible to partake the Lord’s Supper, to express the communion in the Lord Jesus Christ and with the church.

b. The origin of these two ordinances in the church:
- “… of positive and sovereign institution…”
- “… appointed by the Lord Jesus…”
- “… the only lawgiver…”
- A positive and sovereign ordinance is something in addition to the law of nature. It is NOT something merely deduced or by necessarily implied.
- They did not exist from the beginning of time nor in the OT, but came into existence by a positive and sovereign appointment of the Lord Jesus. They are explicitly laid down by Christ the Lord.
- Christ Jesus, in His capacity as the Messianic King is the exclusive author of these ordinances. We are baptized and partake of the Lord's Supper properly only when we do it because Christ commanded us to do so. They are no mere traditions, human or ecclesiastical.
- We do them not because they seem good ideas to us, but because we feel upon our hearts the authority of Christ in His word and respond to that authority. It is out of conscious obedience and allegiance and submission to His authority.
- Careful observation of and obedience to Christ's positive and sovereign institution evident a peculiar love for and loyalty to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ the King.
- Neglecting them evidences a want of submission to Christ.

c, The perpetuity of these two ordinances in the church:
- “… to be continued in his church to the end of the world.”
- These two ordinances are, in a qualified sense, perpetual. They are to be continued from the time they were appointed and are only to cease with the end of the world.
- The ministry of the word for the gathering of God’s children into the visible church continues unto the end of the world; the gathering of God's children into the church requires baptism.
- The Lord's Supper is also clearly to be observed till the return of Christ, 1Cor 11:26, Lk 22:14-20.
- Both these ordinances not only point us back to the living authority of Christ but forward to the actual return and presence of Christ. They are lifelines that remind us of the living Christ and His power.

2. The Administration of the Two Ordinances in the Church (28:2)
a. The two ordinances are the holy appointments of Christ the Head and Lawgiver of His church:
- “These holy appointments…” These are ordinances by the positive and sovereign appointment by Christ, the Holy One; their appointment by the Holy One elevates what appears to be ordinary and common to become holy, sacred.
- Holy things are appointed for a holy people, a people sanctified by the free and sovereign grace of God in His Son Jesus Christ.
- Holy things are to be administered with clean hands and a pure heart.
- They are to be received with due reverence to Him who appointed them.
- The administrators or the recipients who despise or abuse or neglect these holy appointments do betray an unholy character.

b. The lawful administrators of these ordinances:
- “… are to be administered by those only who are qualified…”
- “… and thereunto called,
- Who are they? According to the Scripture, who may baptize and administer the Lord's Supper?
- "... those who are qualified" are those who are equipped and made fit by Christ for the work of the ministry of the word; they are also "called" and set apart to the work by the church
- 1Cor 4:1 speaks of the 'stewards of the mysteries of God.' This text points to the concept of a steward.
- Mt 24:45-51 & Lk 41-44 show that not all in God's household are stewards who have authority and responsibility to give God's people their 'food in due season.'
- Tit 1:5-7 describes elders as stewards of God. God still has stewards in His household (1Tim 3:5-16) and over His people in the continuing office of the elder, pastor-teacher cp. Eph 4:11ff.
- Since baptism and the Lord's Supper are visible symbols of that spiritual food and those mysteries, it is the prerogative of God's stewards to oversee & administer such ordinances.

c. '... according to the commission of Christ.'
- The commission here DOES NOT refer to the Great Commission which was addressed to the Apostles alone with unique promises; the Apostles fulfilled their commission by 70AD. The four parallel accounts of this commission make it very clear that the commission is addressed to Christ's apostles.
- The commission here is Christ’s calling and authorization of men to the ministry of the gospel; those commissioned by Christ are recognized and set apart by His church for the work of pastor and teacher. see Chapter 26:8,9.
- It is only those commissioned by Christ and recognized and set apart by the church that has been authorized to administer the two holy appointments of Christ.
- Both are church ordinances, given to the church to be administered according to the law of Christ.

Churchless Christian

A young family turning to heaven for help.
https://www.facebook.com/sing.f.lau/posts/10206487537002679
May 28, 2016

The new birth, by the free and sovereign and immediate act of the Spirit of God, quickens a man from his native state spiritual deadness. He is brought into a state of grace and salvation in Jesus Christ.

Hearing and believing the gospel of Jesus Christ, and confessing Him as Lord and Saviour in water baptism makes the child of God a Christian.

A child of God that is baptized is added to the membership of an NT church that he may be nourished and edified, i.e. to be taught to observe all things whatsoever Christ has commanded His Apostles.

Churchless Christian is a monstrosity foreign to and unknown in the Holy Scriptures.

The Apostolic practice set the precedent once for all.
"Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers." Acts 2.

The Lord Jesus Christ, the alone Head of His church, must have good reasons why He commanded them who confessed His name to be members of His church. When you have become invisible, then speak of your invisible church, ;-).

Only in tragic circumstances, a child is not born into a family!

Tommy Dennis Taylor
Very well said brother.

Lacay Manny Adonay
What do you mean by saying 'When you have become invisible, then speak of your invisible church'. Is the church invisible?

Sing F Lau
Some people claim that their membership is with the invisible church. My suggestion is, if you are not invisible, it isn't appropriate to speak like that.
