Things New and Old

Ancient truths revealed in the Scriptures are often forgotten, disbelieved or distorted, and therefore lost in the passage of time. Such ancient truths when rediscovered and relearned are 'new' additions to the treasury of ancient truths.

Christ showed many new things to the disciples, things prophesied by the prophets of old but hijacked and perverted by the elders and their traditions, but which Christ reclaimed and returned to His people.

Many things taught by the Apostles of Christ have been perverted or substituted over the centuries. Such fundamental doctrines like salvation by grace and justification have been hijacked and perverted and repudiated by sincere Christians. These doctrines need to be reclaimed and restored to God's people.

There are things both new and old here. "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things"
2Ti 2:7.

"Gill, John, The Cause of God and Truth, 1735-1738.
Reprint, Grand Rapids: Baker, 1981.

"Gill (1697-1771), a baptist puritan pastor,
writes a thorough defense of Calvinistic theology."

The above are listed under "Selected General Theological Bibliography" on page 1137 of Dr. Robert L Reymond's "A New Systematic Theology of the Christian Faith" Nelson, 1998.

So many reformed folks conveniently denounce John Gill as a hyper-calvinistic heretic, but Dr. Reymond, an informed theologian, acknowledges Gill's work as a "thorough defense of Calvinistic theology!"

Whatever has happened?

(however, the term 'baptist puritan' is oxymoronic, a contradiction in terms!)

Charles
I came across the name Reymond today,  Robert L Reymond   Like to learn more about him!

sing
Reymond is an ordained minister of PCA... His "A New Systematic Theology of the Christian Faith" is worth reading. I'm working through it... help me see how a Calvinist ticks.

John Gill's Body of Divinity is still the best to me!

He (Reymond) toooo is pretty messed up with the faith in Christ and justification before God... all typical 'Calvinistic reformed' stuff.

Here is a typical example:
"The New Testament everywhere makes it plain that faith in Jesus Christ is the instrumental 'precondition' [in italic] of justification before God..." page 707, Robert L Reymond.

Precondition? Why are great theologians so blind to the plain declaration of truth?
Romans 3:
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Being justified FREELY... FREELY... FREELY... FREELY!
Is it with any precondition or FREELY?

Before a man is justified before God, i.e. in his unjustified state, he is still in his native state of condemnation and death! How could an unjustified man ever believe? It is like asking a dead man to hold a glass in order to receive water some water! That's quite elementary, I assume.

Titus 3
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Being justified by His GRACE... His GRACE... His GRACE...
Is it with any precondition or FREELY... by His GRACE ALONE?

Faith in Christ is a work of righteousness.

Precondition? That's a FALSE gospel!

Michael
what are the characteristics of a puritan?

sing
The term "Puritans" refers to those non-conformists in the Church of England who wanted to reform the Church of England.

Michael
meaning changing the Anglicans in the church of England? also, are their doctrines similar to baptists?

sing
To purify the Church of England, especially its romish practices, and many other evils.

The Baptists were never part of the establishment church... they were independent free churches. Anglicans are baby sprinklers.

Michael
Baptist and puritan don't match, btw, its Free Grace u r talking about...rite?

sing
Puritans were of the Church of England. Most were Calvinistic.
Baptists were never part of the establishment STATE church.

Among the Baptists, there are free willers and there are Calvinists, and there is free grace. Calvinists are halfway between Arminianism and Free grace.

Michael
then we are baptists, but not the way others define it normally...baptist in correct sense it baptized thru believer's baptism, declaring the person needs it when power of God enables him to do so....

Jonathan
All belong to God and are saved according to His grace!

sing
That's true Jonathan!
  HOWEVER, NOT ALL His children will acknowledge freely that their ETERNAL salvation is by God's free grace alone. They have to sneak in somewhere their efforts in their ETERNAL salvation, being ignorant that whatever efforts with which they can respond are EFFECTS and EVIDENCES of salvation by God's free grace.

Faith is a fruit and effect of eternal salvation, and CAN'T possibly the instrument to obtain that SAME salvation. That's just plain nonsense, and logically fallacious.

So, "saved by God's grace alone" is just a religious shibboleth to many of God's children.

May our Lord bless some of His children to believe the word of truth, the gospel of the salvation by His free and sovereign grace, conditioned on NOTHING in man.
