In the first place, evangelism is REMOTELY connected with the regeneration of those in their native state of sin and death; Mr Washer thinks otherwise. Both the reformed and the deformed are misguided on this.
Evangelism has to do
with the CONVERSION of those whom God has already independently
regenerated; evangelism is making disciples of God's children, i.e. those elect already
regenerated.
Evangelism is relevant only to those ALREADY regenerated by the monergistic and sovereign activity of the
Spirit of God.
John 3:8 "The wind bloweth
where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence
it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit."
Every farmer knows full well that the wind blows where and when it wishes; however, many preachers believe that unless they are on the farm, the wind cannot and will not blow.
To think otherwise is like giving food to the dead! Christ told Peter three times,
"Feed... feed... feed." Food and feeding have NOTHING to do with bringing the dead
to life; it has to do with nourishing the existing life.
But Mr Washer very
likely believes that evangelism is the means the Spirit uses to regenerate
sinners dead in trespasses and sins.
They are, in
theological parlance, gospel regenerationists.
