Things New and Old

Ancient truths revealed in the Scriptures are often forgotten, disbelieved or distorted, and therefore lost in the passage of time. Such ancient truths when rediscovered and relearned are 'new' additions to the treasury of ancient truths.

Christ showed many new things to the disciples, things prophesied by the prophets of old but hijacked and perverted by the elders and their traditions, but which Christ reclaimed and returned to His people.

Many things taught by the Apostles of Christ have been perverted or substituted over the centuries. Such fundamental doctrines like salvation by grace and justification have been hijacked and perverted and repudiated by sincere Christians. These doctrines need to be reclaimed and restored to God's people.

There are things both new and old here. "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things"
2Ti 2:7.

"To day is the third day SINCE these things were done."

"These things" happened since THREE days ago.
Sunday was the THIRD day since those things happened.
Sunday - THIRD day SINCE those things happened;
Saturday - SECOND day SINCE those things happened.
Friday - FIRST day SINCE those things happened.
Thursday - DEEEEEEEEEE day those things happened

Lu 24:21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

Here is a simple observation.
On Sunday morning, two disciples were on their way to Emmaus, and they said to Christ, "But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the THIRD DAY SINCE these things were done."

"These things" - I take these things as referring to the trial, crucifixion and burial of Christ.

"These things" happened since THREE days ago. Sunday was the THIRD day since those things happened.

Sunday - THIRD day SINCE those things happened;

Saturday - SECOND day SINCE those things happened.

Friday - FIRST day SINCE those things happened.

Thursday - DEEEEEEEEEE day those things happened.

If those things happened on Wednesday (with the Passover starting at Tues 6pm), then it would have been the FOURTH days since those things happened by Sunday morning.

I assume those two disciples know how to count!!!

dad what do you think of this?

The argument is that all the events of/surrounding Jesus' death properly ended with the sealing of the tomb and posting of the guards at his tomb, which took place on Thursday, the Passover high Sabbath. That makes Luke's account consistent with what Pr Crosby has here: http://www.letgodbetrue.com/bible/holidays/easter.php

I think his accounting is not sound... in fact bad!

Here's why. Quoting from his article:
## (Matthew 27:62) And on the next day, which is after the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees had gathered together to Pilate.##

From this text we conclude that the tomb was sealed on the day AFTER the day called the preparation day.

We know that the preparation day was the day after the passover day - John 19:42 "There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand."

Also the preparation day is known as the high day - the annual sabbath, distinct from the weekly sabbath.

Joh 19:31 "The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away."

The preparation was an annual sabbath day... "THAT day was a high day."

The day AFTER the preparation/high day was the weekly sabbath. So, it was ON Saturday that the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, requesting that the tomb be made secured during the night of Saturday 6pm to Sunday 6am.... because according to their reckoning from Christ's own words, they expected Him to raise WITHIN THAT period. That is the THIRD night of the "3 days and 3 nights" formula spoken. Guarding the tomb any earlier or any later would make them appeared as foolish! They did take Christ's words of 3 days and 3 night SERIOUSLY!

"3 days and 3 nights" - they guarded the tomb on the 3rd night, Sat 6pm to Sun 6am.

They were smart Jews who didn't waste resources, who took Christ's words seriously.

Christ came forth just before the dawn of Sunday morning!

Coming forth any earlier or any later would prove Himself wrong in His repeated words of "3 days and 3 nights."

The author made a serious error stating this:
## "After the sealing of the tomb, no event is recorded in scripture of anything that happened until the women came to the tomb on Sunday morning. There are therefore two complete days, the 16th and 17th of Nisan, where nothing is recorded about what happened. Sunday was therefore the third day after the sealing of the tomb, the last scriptural event recorded until Sunday morning; the same day that the disciples were on the Emmaus road. This is what "this is the third day" (Luke 24:21) refers to."##

No, after the sealing of the tomb, there was only the night of the Saturday 6pm-Sunday 6am left!!!

The author has to adjust all these days BECAUSE he started out with the WRONG PREMISE that Jesus died and was buried on Wednesday!!!

His first paragraph stated his dilemma neatly

"Note: What is the problem with this scripture? Simply it is the phrase "today is the third day" (Luke 24:21), and the fact that we have taught that Jesus died and was buried on a 14th Nisan, a Wednesday afternoon. Now if we count the days from then, Thursday would be the first day, Friday would be the second day, and Saturday would be the third day, but this conversation on the Emmaus road is Sunday afternoon. This we know because it is said to be "on the same day" (Luke 24:13), which refers back to "on the first day of the week" (Luke 24:1 KJV) or "on one day from the Sabbath" (Luke 24:1 RPT). So there is an apparent disagreement which needs to be explained."

"To day is the third day", and

"To day is the third day SINCE..." are NOT the same!!!

The Scriptures says:

Lu 24:21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day SINCE these things were done.

The chief priests and the Pharisees, as well as the two disciples from Emmaus were ABLE to count far more accurately than very many in the 21st century!!! <LOOOOOL>

okay I'm reading up a bit more... would you say your account matches closely with this? http://www.thesimpletruth.net/booklet/3d3n.html

Josiah Lau
Interesting additional note in the above link:

"NOTE: Those who believe in a Wednesday crucifixion have a problem -- 6 days before the Passover, if He was crucified on a Wednesday, would fall on a Friday. Thus Jesus would have had to enter the streets of Jerusalem riding on an ass on the SABBATH, a direct BREAKING of the Sabbath. Exodus 20:10 says all cattle and beasts of burden were also given a Sabbath of rest. Jesus never broke the Sabbath."

Josiah Lau
Can I also say, dad, that your account does not assume that 3 days and 3 nights = 72 hours, right? because your account is incompatible with 72 hours.

Sing F Lau
Hardly anyone takes "3 days and 3 nights" as equivalent to exactly 72hrs in everyday speech!

Only someone desperate to make "3 days and 3 nights" to fit into a preconceived idea would insist on such exactness! Those who insist that Christ's "3 days and 3 nights" EQUAL 72hrs must insist that Christ rose shortly after Sat 6pm.

Incompatible with 72 exact hrs is a far less problem than having to admit "to day is the FOURTH DAY SINCE these things were done."

Peruse a related article here:
Take a look here: http://things-new-and-old.blogspot.com/2010/06/three-days-and-three-nights.html

---------

Gen 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

The Jewish reckoning of a 24hr day consists of a 12hr evening (6pm-6am) and a 12hr morning (6am-6pm)

p/s  3 days and 3 nights (it's not 3 nights and 3 days!)
- part of 1st day: Thur 6am-6pm. The crucifixion and burial occurred
- 1st night: Thur 6pm - Fri 6am
- 2nd day: Fri 6am - Fri 6pm
- 2nd night: Fri 6pm - Sat 6am
- 3rd day: Sat 6am - Sat 6pm
- 3rd night: Sat 6pm - Sun 6am
Christ rose shortly after Sun dawn... AFTER 3 days and 3 nights.

Some silly by sincere folks say Jesus rose at Saturday 6pm - based on the 3n3d=72hrs idea, i.e. from burial at Wed 6pm - Sat pm. He rose before the soldiers were posted for the night of Saturday.
