Things New and Old

Ancient truths revealed in the Scriptures are often forgotten, disbelieved or distorted, and therefore lost in the passage of time. Such ancient truths when rediscovered and relearned are 'new' additions to the treasury of ancient truths.

Christ showed many new things to the disciples, things prophesied by the prophets of old but hijacked and perverted by the elders and their traditions, but which Christ reclaimed and returned to His people.

Many things taught by the Apostles of Christ have been perverted or substituted over the centuries. Such fundamental doctrines like salvation by grace and justification have been hijacked and perverted and repudiated by sincere Christians. These doctrines need to be reclaimed and restored to God's people.

There are things both new and old here. "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things"
2Ti 2:7.

The Devil's Lie

#Ye_shall_be_as_gods
#but_ended_as_slaves_to_sins
#man_craves_to_be_autonomous

Genesis 3
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

The context: LORD God the Creator sovereignly determines what man, His creature, can and cannot do; God alone determines what is good and evil; God the Creator is the SOLE determiner of what is good and evil.

Satan endeavours to make it all sounds very arbitrary and despotic. Basically, Satan is trying to stir up resentment in the woman, "why do you let God boss over you like this. The fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is perfectly harmless - pleasant to the sight and good for food..." Gen 2:9.

"Knowing good and evil" in its context is to be AUTONOMOUS - behaving as gods, be the determiner of what is good and evil!

Let's get the sense, not just the sound!

God's word to Adam was, “thou shalt surely die” (2:17) - literally, מוֹת תָּמֽוּת - "dying, thou shalt surely die."

Satan's word to the woman was literally, "dying, thou shalt not surely die." Satan did not contradict God's word in an open and blatant way: Satan is never that stupid; he just gives God’s words a subtle twist. Gen 3:1 declares him to be more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. Satan subtly minimizes the enormity of the death spoken of. You will die, but it is not as bad as you have been threatened. So, it's ok to be your own boss - you be the sovereign one who determines what is good and what is evil, e.g. “be as gods yourself!

God said, "Dying, THOU shalt surely die" - that's the force of the Hebrew - death in its fullest form: the death of fellowship between Adam and Adamah, death of fellowship between man and God, death of separation between body and spirit, and death of separation between man and God, etc.

Satan said, "Dying, YE shalt not surely die" - that's the sense of the Hebrew... Satan denied the severity of the death threatened against sin. "It is not so serious... fear not, do your pleasure!" that's the same subtle seduction of Satan to this day!

Satan is more subtle than you think! One who thinks Satan is stupid is the real STUPID one... and you have shown yourself one! Hasn’t God’s word declared, " Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made.

Eat it anyway; be your own boss. Determine for yourself what is good and evil; show that you are gods! And the chief characteristic of fallen man is autonomy, a law unto himself.

And the same subtlety continues to ruin so many.

Yes, ye are as gods!
