Things New and Old

Ancient truths revealed in the Scriptures are often forgotten, disbelieved or distorted, and therefore lost in the passage of time. Such ancient truths when rediscovered and relearned are 'new' additions to the treasury of ancient truths.

Christ showed many new things to the disciples, things prophesied by the prophets of old but hijacked and perverted by the elders and their traditions, but which Christ reclaimed and returned to His people.

Many things taught by the Apostles of Christ have been perverted or substituted over the centuries. Such fundamental doctrines like salvation by grace and justification have been hijacked and perverted and repudiated by sincere Christians. These doctrines need to be reclaimed and restored to God's people.

There are things both new and old here. "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things"
2Ti 2:7.

Only doctrinal preaching will save Christ's sheep?

Mr Packer, may I inquire:
- In what sense does your doctrinal preaching save?
- How does your doctrinal preaching save Christ's sheep?
- Does unsound DOCTRINAL preaching damn?
- Does non-DOCTRINAL preaching save?
- And just who are those hypocrites you have in mind?

Is the sound doctrinal preaching of any use to those whom God has NOT already saved freely by His grace i.e. those still in their native state of sin and death?

Heb 5:12-14
¶For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Were these dull Hebrew Christians hypocrites?

There are too many wicked preachers who are given to slander and demean Christ's redeemed with all sorts of name-calling!

Doctrinal preaching bores a whole host of good sincere immature children of God. They are no hypocrites!

Mr Packer, doesn't this statement of Apostle Paul repudiate your reformed shibboleth?

2Ti 3:16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

2 Timothy 3:16 concerns what the scripture is profitable. It really doesn't seem to contradict what he said; because, he spoke of doctrinal preaching, not the scripture. However, he seemingly is not using the word "save" in the same sense as Paul did in 1 Timothy 4:16.

"Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee."

Not just profitable for doctrine - which requires DOCTRINAL preaching.

Profitable for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness too. THESE need non-doctrinal but practical teaching.

Most Pauline epistles begin with doctrinal chapters, followed by the "Therefore..." chapters.

Doctrines save God's children - those elect already SAVED by God's free grace - from doctrinal lies and errors, and inform and ground them in the truth of their salvation by God's free and sovereign grace in Christ Jesus.

Practical preaching instructs them in godliness and warns and saves them from worldliness and its bitter consequences.
