Things New and Old

Ancient truths revealed in the Scriptures are often forgotten, disbelieved or distorted, and therefore lost in the passage of time. Such ancient truths when rediscovered and relearned are 'new' additions to the treasury of ancient truths.

Christ showed many new things to the disciples, things prophesied by the prophets of old but hijacked and perverted by the elders and their traditions, but which Christ reclaimed and returned to His people.

Many things taught by the Apostles of Christ have been perverted or substituted over the centuries. Such fundamental doctrines like salvation by grace and justification have been hijacked and perverted and repudiated by sincere Christians. These doctrines need to be reclaimed and restored to God's people.

There are things both new and old here. "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things"
2Ti 2:7.

Old School versus New School on Faith and Justification

October 7, 2023

On Faith and Justification

Dr John Gill: 1697-1771, was an early particular-baptist theologian, universally esteemed by his contemporaries of various denominations, and by...

Dr Robert L Reymond (1932-2013, was a renowned reformed theologian, highly regarded by many too.

Dr Reymond said of John Gill:
"Gill (1697-1771), a Baptist puritan pastor, writes a thorough defence of Calvinistic theology."

The above note is listed under "Selected General Theological Bibliography" on page 1137 of Dr. Robert L Reymond's "A New Systematic Theology of the Christian Faith" Nelson, 1998.

Dr John Gill on faith and justification:
"Faith is not the cause, but an effect of justification; it is not the cause of it in any sense; it is not the moving cause, that is the free grace of God... nor even the instrumental cause... it is not in any class of causes whatever; but it is the effect of justification... Now if faith is not the cause, but the effect of justification; then as every cause is before its effect, and every effect follows its cause, justification must be before faith, and faith must follow justification."
- A Body of Doctrinal Divinity Book II, Chapter V, section II. (1769)

Dr Robert L Reymond on faith and justification:
"The New Testament everywhere makes it plain that faith in Jesus Christ is the instrumental 'precondition' [in italic] of justification before God... Therefore, faith in Jesus Christ... must precede justification as its logical (not chronological) prius... Thus we have the order: effectual calling... and faith in Jesus Christ, justification, and glorification."
- A New Systematic Theology of the Christian Faith, page 707. (1998, Nelson)

How vast is the difference between the old-school and the new-school theology?
- it is a gulf unbridgeable!

If the words of Mr Luther - "the doctrine of justification is the article of a standing or falling church" - were true, then how of the many reformed churches are standing churches today? Is your church standing?

I don't doubt it. In my experience, the modern "Reformed" are unaware of how much their theology has been hijacked by Arminian ideas and uninterested in looking at the evidence that proves this point.

Danny
The change in how justification and faith are described between Gill (1769) and Reymond (1998) is enormous. Gill's clear understanding of the matter is in extremely short supply in our day. Reymond's take dominates the landscape of Arminian and Calvinists alike. This position fails to recognize that the gospel is a DECLARATION OF JUSTIFICATION for God's people. If God's people are not ALREADY JUSTIFIED by Christ, then faith has precisely nothing upon which to lay hold. The gospel comes to a child of God and says:

1. Christ HAS JUSTIFIED his people.
2. Those who believe this are among them.
3. Faith is the evidence of that fact.

The gospel is not offering a CHANCE AT JUSTIFICATION provided you do A, B, and C; though this idea is widely promoted in Christendom. The gospel declares that the sheep ARE JUSTIFIED by what Christ has done and that believing this declaration proves that you have faith (Galatians 5:22), are born again (John 3:3), and therefore are one of his chosen sons (Galatians 4:6). As a result of this gospel declaration, believers are exhorted to become a disciple of the one who JUSTIFIES the ungodly.

In the final mix we must recognize JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH is not BEDROCK JUSTIFICATION. God's people were TRANSACTIONALLY JUSTIFIED at Calvary by the blood of Christ (Romans 5:9). That is an extant fact that is independent of man's opinion of the matter. THAT is BEDROCK JUSTIFICATION and it is what the gospel declares. JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH is the experiential means whereby a child of God may come to know and find comfort in this declaration by believing it. It communicates the truth of JUSTIFICATION to the conscience as a cognitive reality. It affirms a pre-existing truth. It does not initiate one's state of JUSTIFICATION actually, it merely affirms it experimentally.

Gill says, "Faith is not the cause, but an effect of justification." I have often said, "Faith is not a CONDITION of the covenant; faith is a PROVISION of the covenant."

Aaron
It very often vexes me that as I look around at all the people who claim the name of Christ have failed to realize that scripture itself speaks in volume of who He is and what His gospel is, His gospel not the gospel as we perceive it upon our own understanding, but upon a rightly dividing of His scriptures that speak so abundantly of what eternal justification is and isn’t. The degree of belief in that which is not another gospel but an exaltation of one’s own efforts rather than the work of Christ is quite pridefully sly in its message and very deceptive to its followers and those who would seek some form of glorification for their own justification rather than the justification that is actually had by Jesus Christ.

Aaron
It seems to be an unwillingness to lay down self at the feet of the Lord and admit we are nothing in His sight without Christ. There’s a natural carnal desire to be confident in one’s own self in all aspects of life and to take that away from someone thinking carnally seems unthinkable to them.

Some years ago I heard a statement, "Some have faith in their faith." It was too profound for me then; now it makes some sense.

Paradise and heaven

#paradise
#heaven

A kind soul sent me a short article saying that paradise and heaven are synonymous. It got me thinking. I don't remember reading such a fable in the Bible. I gave my thoughts...

----------;-

Jesus, in his spirit, went to paradise after he died.

Jesus ascended into heaven after his resurrection.

One who equates paradise as heaven probably hasn't read the Bible for himself; he is just carelessly repeating some shibboleths!

Luke 23:43
"And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise."

Acts 1
¶9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

paradise: paradeisos
heaven: ouranos

By divine inspiration, two completely different words are used; however, worldly-wise men equate the two and make them synonymous! Just like woolly-headed folks equate everlasting as eternal.

Rev 2:7 "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

Note carefully:
- the paradise of God is entered and enjoyed by one that OVERCOMES... it is conditioned by the works of overcoming.
- Heaven is entered completely by grace alone, by the finished work of Christ alone; He alone made a man fit for heaven.

Paradise is for the spirits of the righteous;
Heaven is for the resurrected glorified saints.

Paradise and hell are in the intermediate state; in the realm of time (between death and resurrection); Heaven and the lake of fire are in the eternal state; in the realm of eternity (after resurrection, beyond time)

May our Lord bless you to know these truths from the Scriptures!  Just read the Scriptures closely, the Lord will begin to show you the truth.

John 14
1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

*I will come again* - when is that?

UNTIL Christ comes again, we won't be with him where he is (i.e. in heaven) with the Father. Until our resurrection at Christ's second coming, we won't enter into our eternal inheritance in Christ.

1Pet 1
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

That which is reserved in heaven WILL ONLY be revealed in the LAST TIME... i.e. at Christ's coming again.

Does it make sense now?

Declared Righteous by the Righteousness of Christ, not by your faith

Justification is God's free and gracious act of
imputing Christ's righteousness to the person when
he is in a state of condemnation and death.
Justification by faith is a fiction.

This meme with the words of the late Mr R. C Sproul stirred a thought.

Without a doubt, you have to say a hearty amen to this statement, "We are righteous by virtue of God's imputing to us the righteousness of Christ."

It states the truth of the gospel. However, its necessary implication is devastating to a popular reformed doctrine, sola fide, justification by faith alone.

What that statement is declaring, in other words, is simply this, Our justification before God, that is, to be declared righteous by God, is NOT by faith alone (man's act of believing) BUT by virtue of God's imputing to us the righteousness of Christ.

And when does that imputation take place?

The popular protestant reformed folks insist it is when an UNjustified man believes, then he is justified, i.e. justification is by faith alone.

A simple problem with that is this, an UNjustified man is a man still in his native state of condemnation and death; a man dead in trespasses and sins cannot possibly believe.

Another problem is simply this: it is the just shall live by faith, that is, it is the justified ones that shall live by faith; faith is an effect of God's act of justifying the condemned..

One theologian universally respected in his days for his theological soundness said this:

"The reason why any are justified IS NOT because they have faith; but the reason why they have faith IS because they are justified." ~~ Dr John Gill, A Body of Doctrinal Divinity.

The protestant reformed folks insist the very opposite:

"The reason why any are justified IS because they have faith; yes, the reason why they are justified IS because they have faith."

Deformed is probably a more honest designation.

Christ Jesus came to save the lost;

Christ Jesus came to save the lost;
- TO SAVE the lost, and nothing less,
- to save THE LOST, and nothing more.

So, who are THE LOST?

The word lost implies ownership, the "lost" has an owner. That which does not have an owner can not be said to be lost, to be separated from the owner. Only that which is separated from its owner can be said to be lost.

Christ came to save that which belongs to Him, i.e., His own, those chosen and given to Christ by God the Father, those that belong to Him. They are His but are separated from Him because of sins, that is, lost. Christ came to save HIS people, every one of them among every tribe, nation, and tongue.

"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." Matthew 1:21.

He SAVED HIS PEOPLE from their sins. What did Jesus do to save His people? He lived the life they cannot live, and died the death they deserved. He lived the life of perfect obedience to all the laws of God in the stead of His people, thus securing the righteousness necessary for their justification before God; He bore all the sins of all His people and died the cursed death they deserved, took the full penalty of theirs sins snd suffered the hell of being forsaken by God His Father. He paid the wages of their sins and suffered the full wrath. He conquered death in His resurrection from the dead. He gives eternal life to as many as were given to Him to redeem. He shall return to glorify each one of them.

He SAVED and saved His people to the uttermost. That's the gospel of Jesus Christ.

"As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him." John 17:2.

"As many as" means the exact number; not one more, and not one less! To each one of them - all in their native state of sin and death - Christ freely gives them eternal life, at God' 's own appointed time.

The possession of this eternal life enables them to perform spiritual duties required of them.

Gospel Regeneration - Protestants' Priestcraft

Preachers love one, and loathe the other!

Preachers love one, and loathe the other!

Naturally! But when their hearers also love the same injurious lie, great indeed is the delusion! They very foolishly rest their eternal salvation (since regeneration involves one's eternal salvation...) in the hands of preachers, and some of them are only hirelings!

John 3
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

Is it hard to understand this? Or is the truth too humbling for the high-minded preachers to swallow?

Supposing you were the dead Lazarus lying in the tomb, would you rather have Christ acted on you DIRECTLY, or would you rather have He acted on you INDIRECTLY through the activities of His apostles, to bring you out of death?

The former keeps the apostles properly in their place, while the latter deceitfully elevates them to be mediators!

John 11
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

It was only AFTER Christ Himself had ALREADY raised Lazarus that He summoned His disciples to do something for living Lazarus, i.e. to set him free from the hindrances of the napkin and graveclothes on him! You remove hindrances from men ALREADY MADE ALIVE by Christ!

While Lazarus was dead, Christ did not ask His disciples to do ANYTHING! Christ knew the HARSH realities... the disciples are completely impotent of doing any spiritual good with regard to the dead! He didn't depend on the disciples as the indispensable mediators to get Lazarus out of his deadness!

Get the point? Is that toooooo hard to understand? Or is it an ADDICTION to a form of priestcraft!
