Things New and Old

Ancient truths revealed in the Scriptures are often forgotten, disbelieved or distorted, and therefore lost in the passage of time. Such ancient truths when rediscovered and relearned are 'new' additions to the treasury of ancient truths.

Christ showed many new things to the disciples, things prophesied by the prophets of old but hijacked and perverted by the elders and their traditions, but which Christ reclaimed and returned to His people.

Many things taught by the Apostles of Christ have been perverted or substituted over the centuries. Such fundamental doctrines like salvation by grace and justification have been hijacked and perverted and repudiated by sincere Christians. These doctrines need to be reclaimed and restored to God's people.

There are things both new and old here. "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things"
2Ti 2:7.

What is heavy shepherding?

A Brother inquired
What is heavy shepherding? Examples of heavy shepherding?
In contrast, is there light or no shepherding? What are the examples?
What are the biblical examples of good spiritual shepherding?

---------

These are good questions.

Let me repeat (I have said these many times) an important truth related to your excellent questions.
- The CHIEF manner an under-shepherd (a pastor) shepherd the sheep of Christ (members of a local church under his oversight) is the faithful preaching of the word of God. 2Tim 4:1-5.
- The CHIEF way in which the rule of Christ is administered in a local church is through the preaching of His word; His truth and His will is made known and applied to His sheep.
- “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” The word faithfully preached is shepherding rightly discharged.
- The public ministry of the word may need to be followed up/augmented by personal ministry; some members may need to be reminded personally what has been preached and speaks to their circumstances.

1. Heavy Shepherding
a. What is heavy shepherding?
- Heavy shepherding is lording over the Lord’s people; infringing upon the liberty of church members.
- 1Pet 5:1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: 2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; 3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

b. Examples of heavy shepherding?
There are endless examples…
- “Brother John, it’s time for you to retire; resign and move to Penang.”
- “Brother Bouy, look for another job that does not hinder you from the means of grace.”
- “Brother Won, invite Errol home for lunch.”
- “Brother… tell your wife to dress decently.”
- “Sister, your dress should cover your knees…”
- Visiting homes of members unannounced/uninvited to check on their family life.
- Checking with members how much they have been giving.
- Using the pulpit to attack/pick on the members personally, etc.

2. Is there light or no shepherding?
a. Yes. Neglecting to instruct the people to embrace the doctrines, and the practices of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Not all activities in a church equal/ amount to biblical shepherding.

b. What are the examples?
- Neglecting to exhort the non-resident members to observe good churchmanship in a local church.
- Ignoring wayward church members.
- Sweeping under the carpet problems and issues in the church.

3. What are the biblical examples of good spiritual shepherding?
a. The epistles of the Apostles are great examples of good spiritual shepherding…
- All the epistles deal with doctrines (what the recipients ought to believe), and the applications of those doctrines (how the recipients ought to conduct themselves, their duties to God, and fellow believers.
- Real issues faced by the church are discussed and resolved with the Bible’s authority.

Knowing that a man is justified by the faith OF Jesus Christ...

Knowing the truth is necessarily
logically and chronologically PRIOR
to believing in that truth.

January 8, 2023

"Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law,
but by the faith of Jesus Christ,
even we have believed in Jesus Christ,
that we might be justified by the faith of Christ,
and not by the works of the law:
for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified."
Galatians 2:16 KJV

A Brother quoted the Scripture above to defend the popular notion of justification by faith in Christ. I left these notes for him. May the Lord grant him understanding.

----------

You think the text should read "... by the faith IN Jesus Christ... by the faith IN Christ..."; and you said - KJV's English is old which probably explains why it was written as "faith of Christ".

The KJ translators knew exactly when to translate "believe/faith IN Jesus Christ" and when to translate "the faith OF Christ Jesus" - therefore it cannot be an issue of old English BUT precise translation and exact English, just and "thou" and "you" are precise translation and exact English.

Concerning Gal 2:16, let me draw your attention to these:

1. Knowing that: knowing what? Knowing the truth that
a. Negatively: a man is not justified by the works of the law, i.e. a man is not justified by his own works of obeying the law of God. Read Rom 3:21.
- Do you know this?

b. Positively: a man is justified by the faith of Christ, i.e. a man is justified by Christ’s faithfulness of obeying the laws of God; Christ’s obeying the laws of God secured the righteousness needed for the justification of His people, those given to Him by God.
- Do you know this?

c. In the justification of the condemned, perfect righteousness is an absolute PREREQUISITE; sin (transgression of the law) brought condemnation; righteousness  (obedience to the law) is necessary for justification, the reversal of condemnation.
- This necessary righteousness is either your own righteousness through your own perfect obedience to the laws of God or the righteousness through Christ's perfect obedience to all the laws of God.
- No righteousness, no justification. Period.
- Justification is God’s free and sovereign act of declaring a condemned guilty sinner not guilty but righteous by accounting to him the righteousness secured by Jesus Christ through His faithful obedience to all the laws of God.
- Do you know this?

d. A man’s faith does not come into the equation of his justification before God.
Do you know this?
- It's "the just shall live by faith," - it's the just, those already freely justified by God, who are capable of exercising faith in Jesus Christ; such shall live by faith in Christ, not by observing the ceremonial laws, in order the experience the blessedness of their justified state freely by the grace of God.

2. Knowing the truth, EVEN we have believed the truth
a. It is basic and elementary that knowing the truth is necessarily logically and chronologically PRIOR to believing in that truth. You believe something that is already true; you don't believe to make something come true. This is common sense.
- Romans 3:24 KJT — Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
- Since we KNOW that our justification is freely by the grace of God through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ, i.e. His faithfulness in His redemptive work of securing the necessary righteousness on our behalf, EVEN we have believed in Jesus Christ since by His faith we have been freely justified by God while in our native state of sin, condemnation, and death.
- Do you know the truth, and have you believe it?

3. That we  AFFIRM the truth of our justification by the faith OF Christ
- “that we might be justified by the faith of Christ”, that is, our justification before God is indeed by the faith of Jesus Christ, even Christ’s faithfulness in His redemptive work of securing the necessary righteousness for His people He came to save.
- Do you know the truth, and have you affirmed the same?

4. That we REPUDIATE the lies of justification by the works of the law
- “that we might be justified… NOT by the works of the law."
- Do you know the common and popular error, and have you repudiated it?

5. Here's why - “For by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.”
a. Do you know why by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified? "Therefore by the deeds of the law, there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin."

b. Moreover, faith, man's act of believing in Jesus Christ is a WORK of the law, an act of obedience to God's law.
- Jesus Christ Himself said that faith in Him is a work that God requires of His people TO DO.
- John 6:28 ¶Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 ¶Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
- Believing in Jesus Christ is a work God requires of His children because Christ is their Saviour. It is the duty and responsibility of God's children to believe in the truth of their justification FREELY by the grace of God, not by their faith IN Jesus Christ.

c. Believing in Jesus Christ is obedience to a commandment/law of God.
- 1John 3:23 "And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment."

You are free to choose to be justified by your faith in Christ, i.e by the works of the law.

May the Lord grant you understanding.

Hear well, this is your job function - Feed, feed, and feed

Hear well, this is your job function.
This is the ordained purpose of the ministry of the word:
He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

January 2, 2011

I noticed a strange phenomenon:
When a preacher insists that his Christ's ordained ministry is only intended for the living, and not the dead, rhetorical questions like, "Just how do you know who are the dead, and who are the living in your audience" are contemptuously hurled at him.

The smart-alecky questions betray serious misunderstanding and unbelief concerning the purpose of the gospel ministry.

How would the apostles answer those questions?
Would an answer like this reflect their ministry?

Oh, WE DON'T NEED to know who are the dead. WE HAVE ABSOLUTELY no interest in the dead. When we go out seeking lambs and sheep, we have an interest in the lambs and sheep only. They are those whom God Himself has regenerated. The dead are OUTSIDE the scope of our calling and is NONE of our business.

So, the question 'how do you know... blah blah blah' is IRRELEVANT to us. For that matter, we ALSO don't know who are the regenerated among the hearers.

We DON'T NEED to know either to discharge our ministry faithfully in accordance with Christ's will.

We ALREADY KNOW full well that our ministry has NOTHING to do with the dead, but for the living only - Christ's lambs and sheep. Christ sent us to FEED... FEED... FEED... the lambs and the sheep. He sends us to make disciples... and disciples can ONLY be made out of God's children.

We have nothing to do with those still dead in sins .. they hate what we bring in Christ's name in any case!

Well said.

(KJV) 2 Timothy 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

Amen! The key to the purpose of the gospel is contained in the last part of this verse. The gospel is a light for those who can see. What use is a flashlight to a blind (or dead) man?

Salvation is by Grace alone by Faith alone, and ALL glory is for God (not self).

You are very fascinated by 'faith alone.'
Whose faith? And how by faith alone?

James said this: Jas 2:24 "Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only."

You, with SO VERY MANY OTHERS, say, "... by faith alone..."

James said, ""Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only."

jp @ " In Protestant theology, however, the Faith of the individual is absolutely necessary and is itself the efficient and sufficient response of the individual that effects Justification."

Whose faith effects justification?

And what justification is that?

Is the justification by God's free grace the same as the justification effected by the believing acts of the justified?

How could faith, an effect and evidence of justification by God's free grace be the means to effect the same justification at the same time?

Think before spewing forth shibboleth again. Just a brotherly reminder. No offence intended.

Kindly answer the questions. Thanks.

Sing F Lau
Jp, It is faith alone... without context, this is a heretical shibboleth.

I am asking, "faith alone" in what CONTEXT?

You obviously did not read the link I suggested. I expect you to interact intelligently, otherwise please hold your peace.

Justification by grace ALONE, and justification received by faith ALONE are two SEPARATE and DISTINCT acts... the former is the MONERGISTIC CAUSE, and the latter is the SYNERGISTIC EFFECT and EVIDENCE.

The former is LOGICALLY and CHRONOLOGICALLY PRIOR to the latter.

Can you tell me whether Abraham was justified before Gen 15:1-6? Or was he still an un-justified man be God before Gen 15:1-6.

Sing F Lau
Rome is COMPLETELY mistaken that forensic justification is by both faith (man's act of believing) and works.

The daughters of Rome, i.e. Protestants, amputated one of those gangrenous limbs and insisted that forensic justification is by faith alone.

Both are equally wrong. The old-school Baptists were right when they insisted: "The reason why any are justified IS NOT because they have faith; but the reason why they have faith IS because they are justified."

Forensic justification is by the free grace of God alone based on the finished work of Christ alone - "Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:".

God justifies FORENSICALLY the UNGODLY, i.e. the elect still in the state of sin and death.

Faith justifies EVIDENTIALLY the children of God, those already justified by God's free grace.

ONLY children of God (regenerated elect) are capable of believing. Their act of believing evidences the prior justification by God's free grace and regeneration.

An unjustified man, i.e. still under the condemnation of sin and death, is incapable of believing.

Faith (believing) justifies a man EVIDENTIALLY, i.e. believing evidences the justified state of the believer by the free grace of God. Works also evidence the justified state of a man.

Believing and works of righteousness JUSTIFY evidentially... that they have been justified (forensically) by God.

Thanks!

Perhaps yours is truly reflective of Arminians theology!

They believe the EXACT things you said above, not one bit different.

Some label me as hyper, you are the first to say that I have ""free will" or Arminianism theology." You do love throwing around labels, don't you?

Either you are the most obtuse man or the most enlightened man. Either way, you deserve a medal <LOL>

I see that you are a man who loves shibboleth... regurgitating all those religious cliches without understanding them.

Sing F Lau
"Believe and seek may be the only thing one can do to receive the reward of Faith."
=====
Jp, why don't you slow down, and think about what you write. Do they make sense... or are they just religious gibberish fed to you.

Faith is a saving grace (as a fruit of salvation) worked within the heart of a child of God, enabling him to seek and believe.

But you have put the cart before the horse in your statement above. Please write some sense. I can tolerate ignorance, but I expect you to be sensible and rational.

Sing F Lau
"Discerning you and your knowledge of God is not throwing around labels.

Judging by that, you have VERY LITTLE discernment.

I have helped many to flee from the deception and bondage of Arminianism.

Sing F Lau
Thanks for all the Scriptures.

Please at least explain them... otherwise, how do I know what you want to teach me? And if you need to quote further, please quote the KJV. That's the one I am familiar with.

So, in what way have I put the cart before the horse. At least when I say you did so, I demonstrate that. Don't abuse your privilege here.

Sing F Lau
Thanks. Thanks for your amazing gift... you even have access to the SECRET and HIDDEN wisdom of God.

I know nothing of the SECRET and HIDDEN wisdom of God.

I know something of the REVEALED wisdom of God in Christ Jesus.

You do understand a whole lot of things. That's wonderful.

Sing F Lau
Thanks for all your wisdom...

That's a good short sermon.

"The just shall live by faith" - wrested

Romans 1:17
For therein is the righteousness of God
revealed from faith to faith: as it is written,
The just shall live by faith.

Galatians 3:11
But that no man is justified by the law
in the sight of God, it is evident:
for, The just shall live by faith.

Hebrews 10:38
Now the just shall live by faith:
but if any man draw back,
my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

Habakuk 2:4
Behold, his soul which is lifted up
 is not upright in him:
but the just shall live by his faith.

"The just shall live by faith."

This is one of the most abused passages of the Holy Scriptures.

"The just shall live by faith" is a statement about the just. Who are the just? The just are those already freely justified by God; that's the only way a guilty condemned man can be just before God. This is elementary.

What does the statement declare about the just? Those already freely justified by God shall live by faith in the Son of God, not trusting in the observations of the ceremonial laws. Abraham was marshalled as the irrefutable evidence and classic illustration of this truth. Gen 15:1-6.

"The just shall live by faith" is not how the unjust shall be justified, i.e. by their believing, as popularly advanced by the sola fideists' "justification by faith alone." They have completely perverted the truth of justification by God's free grace.

It is the justified that are able to believe; it is not the unjustified - those still under condemnation - who believe in order to be justified by God. That's like saying the dead shall live by breathing!

The justification of the condemned is FREELY by the grace of God, based solely upon the faith of Christ, i.e. the faithfulness of Christ in His work of redemption.

Romans 3
21 ¶But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus...

He shall save his people from their sins.

Joseph, thou son of David,
fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife:
for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

#He_Shall_Save_His_People_From_Their_Sins

Matthew 1
20 ... Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Some observations:

1. That which is conceived:
- That which is conceived DID NOT EXIST before the conception; conception brings into existence that which is conceived; this is plain and obvious; only some somersaults can obfuscate the obvious.
- what is that which is conceived in Mary by the Holy Spirit? It is the Son of God. Before the eternal Word was made flesh (John 1:1,14), there was no Son of God (the dual-natured Divine-human Being), there was the eternal Word (the one-natured Divine Being.)

2. Thou shalt call his name JESUS:
- that specific name is divinely given, aptly descriptive of the office and works of the person named.
- "Jesus" means "Jehovah is salvation." Jesus, the Son of God, the promised Saviour of His people, the God incarnate, the Word made flesh, the God-man, the only Mediator between God and man.

3. He shall save His people:
- His people are those that belong to Him, they are His possession; they were chosen and given to Him by the Father, entrusted to Him to save them.
- His people needed to be saved; they can't save themselves; He shall save all them to the uttermost, all by Himself, without the aid of those needed to be saved; they are completely impotent, and worst, they are in enmity against God.

4. From their sins
- From their sins... not from their poverty, sickness, etc; nevertheless, Christ's religion is capable of elevating the social well-being of believers wherever it takes root. Christ's religion inspires industry that delivers His people from poverty and healthy living that inevitably improves that health.
- the wages of sin is death, the eternal separation from God, the very fountain of all blessings, temporal and eternal.
- To save them from their sins, Jesus stood in their place as their perfect substitute, living the sinless life of perfect obedience to God, and dying in their stead to suffer the wrath of God due to ALL their sins.
- By His righteousness (life of perfect obedience) and blood (atoning death), His people are made accepted in Christ.
- He saves His people to the uttermost, all by Himself; the salvation He has secured, all by Himself, is freely applied to each of His people when they are still dead in trespasses and sins, completely incapable of aiding or assisting in their own salvation.

5. Only after the eternal salvation has been freely applied to them when they were still dead in trespasses and sins, are they capable of obeying the call to believe the gospel of their salvation in Christ Jesus.
