Things New and Old

Ancient truths revealed in the Scriptures are often forgotten, disbelieved or distorted, and therefore lost in the passage of time. Such ancient truths when rediscovered and relearned are 'new' additions to the treasury of ancient truths.

Christ showed many new things to the disciples, things prophesied by the prophets of old but hijacked and perverted by the elders and their traditions, but which Christ reclaimed and returned to His people.

Many things taught by the Apostles of Christ have been perverted or substituted over the centuries. Such fundamental doctrines like salvation by grace and justification have been hijacked and perverted and repudiated by sincere Christians. These doctrines need to be reclaimed and restored to God's people.

There are things both new and old here. "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things"
2Ti 2:7.

To this end WAS I BORN...

To this end WAS I BORN...

Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a child IS BORN, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Matthew 2:2
Saying, Where is he that IS BORN King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

Luke 1:35
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be BORN of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Luke 2:11
For unto you IS BORN this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

John 1:14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only BEGOTTEN of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Joh 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only BEGOTTEN Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only BEGOTTEN Son...

John 18:37
Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end WAS I BORN, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth...

Jesus is BORN... and He is the only BEGOTTEN of God.

Yes, Jesus is BORN, and BEGOTTEN at a particular point in time.

There was a time when Jesus did not exist. Before the Word was made flesh, there was no Jesus, the God-man. The Word is eternal, but the Word was not the Son. The Son is the eternal Word made flesh in time.

The Word is the one-natured eternally existing Divine Being.

The Son Jesus is the dual-natured Divine/human Being, the eternal Word made flesh.

But I am told that Jesus is ETERNAL, that Jesus the God-MAN is eternal, and that eternal Jesus became manifest, was made flesh!

They say 'born' doesn't mean has a beginning or 'begotten' doesn't mean brought into being when these words are used in relation to Jesus the Man! All these because of the notion, 'Jesus is eternal.'

Before I get more confused by strange notions, I had better go to bed.

It WAS NOT the Son that was made flesh.
It was the Word that was made flesh.
The Son is the Word made flesh.

Peter Petersen
If i may, i just wanna say... "For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist." - II John1:7

Sing F Lau
The deceiver insists that Jesus the Son of God of flesh and bone is ETERNAL, but the Bible repeatedly declares that Jesus is conceived and born ... the only begotten of the Father.

Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The Word was made flesh, i.e. become partakers of flesh and blood... and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father...

Peter Petersen
Right, amen.

Sing F Lau
For unto you is BORN this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11)

IS BORN... a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

That which is born is Jesus the Son, even the begotten Son of God. That which is born is the man Jesus, the eternal un-begotten Word made flesh, i.e. the eternal Word took upon Himself flesh and blood... so that the man Jesus is perfectly fitted to be the Saviour of His people.

A man is needed to be the substitute for men. A perfect and sinless man alone is adequate for that role... which is why Jesus was uniquely begotten as described in Lu 1:35 "And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be BORN of thee shall be called the Son of God."

Why do people insist that Jesus is eternal when the Scriptures declared Him as 'IS BORN THIS DAY'???

'Jesus' is his personal name, disclosing His work as Saviour.

'Christ' describes His office as the Anointed One.

'Lord' is his title, declaring his deity.

Jesus the Son of God is God, the Word made flesh is BOTH divine and human.

PJ Walters
I agree that He did not have that body before it was conceived in Mary's womb.

Sing F Lau
I agree that He did not have that body before it was conceived in Mary's womb.
========

Jesus is that man conceived in the womb of Mary, the eternal Word made flesh.

Who is 'He' that did not have that body before it was conceived in Mary's womb? The divine Word, or Jesus?

What is the 'it' that was conceived in Mary's womb?

Those who oppose themselves

Are you among those who oppose themselves?

December 18, 2022  ·

#oppose_themselves

Are you among those who oppose themselves?

2Tim 2
24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

1. Those who oppose themselves - who are they?
- they are capable of being brought to acknowledge the truth; therefore, these are not those dead in trespasses and sins.- God's children often oppose themselves. See the foolish Galatians reverting back to ceremonial laws as the means of practical justification instead of faith in Jesus Christ!  And the Hebrews Christians.
- They reject and scorn the truth delivered to them; they refuse to acknowledge the truth taught in the Scriptures.
- They have foolishly walked into the snare of the devil; they have made themselves captives of the devil by believing lies.
- What a frightening and fearful description of rejecting the word of truth!

2. Specific effort to restore such
- Often such are self-conceited and have become unteachable; they have become wise in their own eyes. In rejecting the truth, they embrace lies that are injurious to their spiritual well-being.
- Still, such foolish believers must not be given up. Specific instructions are given to the servant of the Lord to recover them.
- Don't get into strife with them.
- Be gentle unto all such who foolishly oppose themselves...
- Apt to teach... teach aptly... i.e. bring the truth of God's word to bear upon the issue. Be patient with them, for such who oppose themselves are stiffnecked and recalcitrant too... They may bite and kick back but don't give up on them easily.

Peradventure... perhaps... God will give them repentance for the acknowledgement of the truth. Peradventure only; therefore perishes any presumption; He may leave them to die in their unbelief! Be not contemptuous of His servant in teaching you.

The acknowledgement of the truth IS a PREREQUISITE  for such to recover themselves from the devil's snare and escape from his captivity.

Why would a child of God harden himself against the truth of God's word? Why would one put himself in such a precarious and fearful state?

Hebrews 10:31
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

The gospel: God's own provision of righteousness for condemned sinners

The roots hold up the trunk or
the trunk holds the roots in the ground?

December 14, 2011

Dear Brother Sing F Lau
Praise Jesus our Lord and King.

I feel that there is a shortfall in your summary; you have jumped around to several places in scripture on points of justification. But there is one area that you did not clearly explore and that is Romans 3:1 through 11:36. Paul is writing to the church in Rome to those who have believed the teaching of the early church as evidenced by what was written by Luke in the Book of Acts. All the epistles written by Paul, Peter, John, James, and Jude were written to believers in those cities. Paul was writing to the believers in Rome that at one time worshipped Roman gods and he was telling them that they were followers of Jesus Christ. That they were not to worship Jesus and the Roman gods together.   ~ Shellie ~

Sing
Indeed, indeed! The Apostle Paul was writing to “... all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints.” He was writing to those beloved of God and called to be saints.”

However, I was commenting on justification as summarized in the 1689 CoF.
https://things-new-and-old.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-doctrine-of-justification-as.html

A brief outline of Romans’ teaching on justification:
- The gospel: God's own provision of righteousness
- Bad news: all men without exception are under condemnation
- God provides righteousness in Jesus Christ.
- Justification is accomplished by the righteousness through the faith(fulness) OF-OF-OF Christ alone. (The faithfulness of Christ secured the righteousness required for the justification of His people)
- Justification is applied to each elect freely by the grace of God alone.
- Justification is experienced through faith IN-IN-IN Christ alone.

The three 'alone' are separate and distinct.
Now you flesh up the skeleton.

Sing
That's fine with me. The 1689 CoF tells me what the Framers have understood what the Bible teaches. There is no man whom I can't learn something from!

Fine, let's stick to the Bible. Here is the summary on justification from Romans.

Romans teaching on justification in brief outline
- The gospel: God's provision of righteousness by the faithfulness of Christ
- Bad news: all men without exception are under condemnation
- God provides righteousness in Jesus Christ.
- Justification is accomplished by the faith OF-OF-OF Christ alone.
- Justification is applied by the free grace of God alone...
- Justification is experienced through faith IN-IN-IN Christ alone.

Don't quote Scriptures and assume I understand what you wish those Scriptures to say; don't assume I agree with your opinions.

So, quote the Scriptures, and then spell out what you intend those Scriptures to teach. These are the ground rules on my turf. You agree, welcome and enjoy yourself.

Sing
Let me be clear with you: there is no virtue in quoting the Scriptures. A child as well as the devil can do that.

Unless your quotations of Scriptures are demonstrated to be related to the subject of justification, I shall delete them.

I am never impressed with people quoting Scriptures. The devil showed his prowess at the temptation of Christ.

I have preached 10 sermons on Jude 1-5 just recently. So what do you want to say about justification? Keep away your machine gun and stop spraying and wasting your bullets. If you can shoot at all, bring out your sniper gun with the cross hair on.

You tell me what was Jude saying!

Sing
Oh good. We now know the subject - 'how we lead others to Christ in a clear and crisp manner.'
That's a good subject. Keep speaking... quote Scriptures and let's study the subject.

Sing
Yes, I call them creepers because they are spineless and can't walk upright. What has that to do with the subject you have in mind - 'how we lead others to Christ in a clear and crisp manner.'

Jude wrote to those who are ALREADY in Christ!

Shellie
There has to be a point where God calls a sinner and the sinner responds with repentance and asking for forgiveness of said sins and understanding that he/she is born into sin. That just because they feel that they are a fairly good person does not exclude them from having to ask for forgiveness.

Sing
A plan is just some intention/purpose in mind... not executed yet. Is the gospel God's purpose/plan to save sinners, or is the gospel the good news of what God has ALREADY accomplished and applied to intended hearers? Don't get diverted by this needed question!

Let's stay focused and don't stray from the good subject: 'how we lead others to Christ in a clear and crisp manner.'

Sing
When is that point when God calls a sinner?
And what happens when God calls a sinner?
Does God need a preacher to call a sinner out of his native state of sin and death to that of grace and eternal life?
What is the role of a preacher with respect to those whom God saves?

Shellie
Are we not all ministers of Christ? Let us look at the sinner in light of knowing nothing about Christ. It is better to clearly allow the Holy Spirit to lead in the direction of the teaching. But let us also look at when someone is not walking in truth and there are those that do not teach the biblical teaching on salvation. i Cor. 1:10

Sing
Yes, you are a minister of Christ, so please answer the questions on your statement, 'There has to be a point where God calls a sinner...' Other creep and stray. But you please stay focused.

So concerning your statement 'There has to be a point where God calls a sinner' please answer these questions:
- When is that point when God calls a sinner?
- And what happens when God calls a sinner?
- Does God need a preacher to call a sinner out of death to eternal life?
- What is the role of a preacher with respect to those whom God saves?

Come unto the knowledge of the truth

Enjoy yourself! Come, take a buffalo ride with me,
and we will plough some ground together
and find some gold nuggets,
if you are willing and able to see them!

December 14, 2012

Here is the passage: 1Tim 2:
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

An RB pastor preached a sermon on the above passage entitled "Salvation for All."

Based on the sermon title, I wish to ask these two groups of questions concerning the passage:

A. On the 'Salvation'

Q1. What is the salvation that God our Saviour will have all men to be saved?
Q2. What is the salvation that is related to coming to the knowledge of the truth?
Q3. What is the salvation that is related to the ministry of Paul as the gospel preacher?
Q4. Is the will of God our Saviour to have all men saved accomplished and fulfilled?
Q5. Does the accomplishment of God's will to have all men saved depend on man's help?
Q6. What will happen to those under consideration who fail, if any, to come to the knowledge of the truth?

B. On 'for all'
Q7. Who are the "all men" that God our Saviour willed to be saved? Who is under consideration in this passage?
Q8. What is the relation between "all men" in v4 and "all" in v6?
Q9. Do "all men" and "all" that are ransomed come unto the knowledge of the truth?
Q10. How is coming to the knowledge of the truth related to the ministry of the preacher?
Q11. Is God's will accomplished for "all men" and "all" that are ransomed?

I do expect intelligent and coherent answers.

If you don't understand the questions, inquire further.

I pressed this question upon an RB:

Are 'all men' and 'all' those ransomed by Christ saved and come to the knowledge of the truth as willed by God?

That's a very simple and straightforward question. Give it a try!

He replied:
On your last question, I would say yes. all those who are ransomed by Christ will come to the saving knowledge of God.

I inquired further:
What do you think of the statement: "All those who are ransomed by Christ will come to the saving knowledge of God."
- Is this saving knowledge of God the same as the knowledge of the truth as willed by God?
- What is meant by a saving knowledge of God?
- How does a man come to a saving knowledge of God?
- Can a man come to a saving knowledge of God WITHOUT the gospel ministry?
- Is everyone ransomed by Christ reached by the gospel ministry and brought to a saving knowledge of God?
- What does a saving knowledge of God do?

Tell us your understanding of this matter. Thanks.

Dellis
Is there a saving knowledge of God mentioned in scripture?
Many define knowledge and truth in the same way.
Is saving knowledge the same as knowledge of the truth?

Preaching the gospel of salvation truthfully

December 14, 2012  ·   ·

Preaching the gospel of salvation truthfully

Commanding ALL MEN to believe in Jesus Christ can only be done honestly and truthfully if Christ has indeed died for ALL MEN. Otherwise, where is the basis of telling that to ALL MEN, and commanding ALL MEN to believe that Jesus Christ has died for them? Doesn't that amount to commanding some men to believe a big lie? No? Why not?

Surely there must be a way to tell the truth, and tell it truthfully, and according to what Christ has actually done.

38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. 39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

He did not come to do sinner's or preachers' will! Just remember that please!

John 17
1 ¶ These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

AS MANY AS... not one more and not one less.

Presenting the truth of the gospel of salvation must be according to the truth of the matter, not some whims and fancies of men!

There is NO VIRTUE in misrepresenting what Christ has done. Exaggeration and untruthfulness are not virtues but vices!!!

Dellis Layne

I hope you don't mind, but I shared this one. John 6:37

All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

All those that are GIVEN SHALL come.

Wei Yan
John 10:27 "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:"... sheep hears God voice, sheep follows 🙂

Sing
Dellis Layne Worsham Sr., please read about the two comings here in John 6:37 - http://things-new-and-old.blogspot.com/.../john-637-two-comings.html

Tell me what you think!

All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

Each and every elect comes to Christ by having BEING drawn to Christ and united with Him by the sovereign and gracious act of the Father.

Each of the above who does come to Christ through the gospel call, Christ will in no wise cast out!

Two different and distinct comings.

A biblical distinction is the essence of sound theology. Thanks.

Sing
Wei Yan, that's a good passage.
'My sheep' - refers to the elect given to Christ by God.

"hear My voice" - the sheep dead in their trespasses and sins, hear the life-giving voice of the Son of God, summoning them out of their deadness to eternal life.

'I know them, and they follow me' must be understood in the context above. In the context above every sheep hears the life-giving voice of Christ.

The dead hearing Christ's life-giving voice is distinct from God's children hearing the voice of the preachers calling for their conversion to the truth of their salvation.

The Church of Jesus Christ and Particular Local Churches

The Church of Christ Jesus, and the local church of which you are a member...

An elect is united to THE ONE glorious church of Jesus Christ, in time, by the grace of God alone, through the effectual calling out of the state of sin and death, in which he is by nature, to that state of grace and salvation, without his meeting any condition (obviously one in the state of sin and death can't possibly meet any condition, can he?). This is eternal salvation by God's free grace ALONE. And ALONE means ALONE; alone excludes all others.

A child of God (an elect that has been effectually called) becomes a member of a local church through obeying the command of Christ to 'repent and be baptized.' And he maintains his membership by his walking in the ways of the Lord - daily entering the strait gate, and walking the narrow way. This is working out his own salvation with fear and trembling. This is temporal salvation conditioned on the obedience of God's children.

1689.26.5
"In the execution of this power wherewith He is so intrusted, the Lord Jesus calleth out of the world unto Himself, through the ministry of His Word, by His Spirit, those that are given unto Him by His Father,(9) that they may walk before Him in all the ways of obedience, which He prescribeth to them in His Word.(10) Those thus called, He commandeth to walk together in particular societies, or churches, for their mutual edification, and the due performance of that public worship, which He requireth of them in the world.(11)"

The Lord God CALLS out of the world unto Himself, through the ministry of His Word, and by His Spirit (this is the same as the effectual calling stated in 1689.10.1 - "Those whom God hath predestined unto life, He is pleased in His appointed and accepted time, effectually to call,(1) by His Word and Spirit, out of that state of sin and death in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ...) ...

Those that are thus called out of the world into His one church by His sovereign grace, He commands to walk together in particular churches through the gospel ministry.

There is one general church of Jesus Christ...
and...
there are many particular churches of Jesus Christ, a partial manifestation of that one Church in time.

"An elect is united to THE glorious church of Jesus Christ, in time" - i.e. at God's own appointed and accepted time. The time an elect is united with the ONE glorious church of Jesus Christ is determined by the Triune God alone.

The time a child of God united himself with a particular church is co-determined by himself and that particular church.

"Those thus called, He (Christ, the Head of the His church) commandeth to walk together in particular societies, or churches, for their mutual edification, and the due performance of that public worship, which He requireth of them in the world."

Are you obeying this command of Christ, the Head of His Church?

"Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen" Mat 28:20.

Conformed to the image of Christ

December 7, 2019

#Conformed_to_the_image_of_Christ

Romans 8
28 ¶And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

If you were given a chance to become like any person of your choice, who would that be?

Which great businessman, celebrity,  president, sportsman, world leader, etc. would you have chosen?

How is that choice compared to the perfect and glorious choice of God for you?

It seems that many Christians would hate the very thought that they have been predestinated to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ; They are ashamed of Christ and His hard sayings.  "No such Christians," some naive souls would retort.

Mark 8:38 KJV — Whosoever, therefore, shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

I can hear some scorn, "Oh, but surely Christ is speaking of unbelievers!" Pray tell, how could unbelievers be charged for being ashamed of Christ and his word?

Meditating on God's word

December 7, 2022  ·

#meditating

Below is a question to our dear SDC pastor and brothers for our mutual learning and growing together in the Lord for our greater usefulness in the King's service:

Q1. Is meditating on God's word daily possible for all of God's children?

----------

1Timothy 4:15
Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

Psalms 1:2
But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

A few thoughts on the question:

- It’s not a simplistic either-or matter. Not all living people are healthy and robust, many are sickly and weak; even so, among God’s children. Some sincere children of God are so busy that they say they don’t even have time to empty their bowels daily! Some are too old to have the mental capacity to meditate. Others are not spiritually minded to meditate.  So, it’s NOT possible for ALL God’s children to meditate on God’s word, much less daily.

- To meditate on God’s word is both a heavenly privilege and blessing; even so, with our daily bread! When partaking in physical food for our bodily nourishment becomes a chore and a burden, it is a clear sign of health decay; even so in the spiritual realm.

- To meditate is to think/consider/reflect about something carefully; to meditate on God’s word (lower case ‘w’, i.e. Scriptures; upper case ‘W’ refers to the second Person of the Triune God, the eternal Word) is to think/consider/reflect on God’s word carefully – its meaning and doctrines, and its lessons for us.

- To meditate on God’s word requires an inquisitive and learning mind, pondering on what has been read – what does it say, what are the practical lessons.

- Meditating God’s word is POSSIBLE for many of God’s children if they want to; some of God’s children may not have the mental or spiritual capacity to meditate. God’s children with carnal minds do not have the mental capacity to read, much less to meditate on God’s word.

- Read a portion of the Scriptures, and let a specific matter linger in your mind. It’s like popping a sweet into your mouth and letting it melt slowly and the taste lingers on.

What happened to the 3000 added to the church?

December 7, 2022  ·

Shared with Public

Question on Acts 2:40ff - what happened to these added 3000 into the Jerusalem church? Did they report back to the apostles to inform them of their well-being? Just curious.

------------

## Most of the 3000 added to the Jerusalem church were mainly devout Jewish men (Acts 2:5) from many different places throughout the vast Roman Empire (Acts 2:8-11)

- After the Pentecost Feast was over, they returned to their respective homes scattered throughout the Roman Empire. They likely returned to observe those annual feasts for some years ( some up to 70AD) and meet up with the Jerusalem church.

- DEVOUT Jews come to Jerusalem THREE TIMES each year to observe the three annual feasts commanded by God. There are three annual feasts that the Lord commanded all of Israel to celebrate in Jerusalem — Passover, Pentecost and Feast of Tabernacles.

- Remember that there were TWELVE Apostles in the Jerusalem church; what were they doing? Just like what Apostle Paul was doing among the Gentiles; many of them were visiting the scattered Jewish believers (non-resident members of the church in Jerusalem), making converts, and establishing churches.

- Act 9:31 “Then had the CHURCHES rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.”

- How did those churches throughout all of Judaea, Galilee and Samaria come about? How did they happen? The Apostles from the Jerusalem church were also busy following up with the scattered Jewish believers and establishing churches in those cities and further away.

Thus, there was communication between the non-resident members and their church in Jerusalem... until they became members of the churches established in their cities through the ministry of the Apostles and their helpers.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

Shepherding

 December 7, 2022

#shepherding

A man asked these questions:
- what is heavy shepherding?
- Examples of heavy shepherding?
- In contrast, is there light or no shepherding? What are the examples?
- What are the biblical examples of good spiritual shepherding?

---------

Thank you for asking these good questions.

Let me repeat (I have said these many times) an important truth related to your excellent questions.

- The CHIEF manner an under-shepherd (a pastor) shepherds the sheep of Christ (members of a local church under his oversight) is the faithful preaching of the word of God. 2Tim 4:1-5.

- The CHIEF way in which the rule of Christ is administered in a local church is through the preaching of His word; His truth and His will is made known and applied to His sheep.

- “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” The word faithfully preached is shepherding rightly discharged

- The public ministry of the word may need to be followed up/augmented by the personal ministry; some members may need to be reminded personally what has been preached and speaks to their circumstances.

1. Heavy Shepherding
a. What is heavy shepherding?
- Heavy shepherding is lording over the Lord’s people; infringing upon the liberty of church members.
- 1Pet 5:1 "The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: 2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

b. Examples of heavy shepherding?
There are endless examples…
- “Brother John, it’s time for you to retire; resign and move to Penang.”
- “Brother Buoy, look for another job that does not hinder you from the assembly of the saints.”
- “Brother Won, invite Errol home for lunch.”
- “Brother… tell your wife to dress decently.”
- “Sister, your dress hem should be 4 inches below your knees…”
- Visiting homes of members unannounced/uninvited to check on their family life.
- Checking with members how much they have been giving.
- Using the pulpit to attack/pick on the members personally, etc.

2. Is there light or no shepherding?
a. Yes. Neglecting to instruct the people to embrace the doctrines and the practices of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Not all activities in a church equal/ amount to biblical shepherding.

b. What are the examples?
- Neglecting to exhort the non-resident members to observe good churchmanship in a local church.
- Ignoring wayward church members.
- Sweeping under the carpet problems and issues in the church.

Q3. What are the biblical examples of good spiritual shepherding?
a. The epistles of the Apostles are great examples of good spiritual shepherding…
- All the epistles deal with doctrines (what the recipients ought to believe), and the applications of those doctrines (how the recipients ought to conduct themselves, their duties to God, and fellow believers.
- Real issues faced by the church are discussed and resolved with the Bible’s authority.

I hope this helps. You probably have some better ideas.

The Devil can quote Scriptures much better than you do

December 6, 2015  ·

Matthew 4:6,
"And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone."

Some observations:

1. The Devil can quote Scriptures too, and he is pretty good at it.
- He has been at it since the time in the Garden of Eden!

2. The Devil quotes Scriptures not to instruct the truth of God, but invariably to twist and pervert it, to mislead God's children to disobey God their Father.

3. The Devil peddled his craft on Jesus Christ; you can be sure you won't be exempted! So beware!

4. God's promises of protection and preservation are no license for presumption.
- Ps 91:11 "For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways."

5. The word of God must be rightly divided.
- 2Tim 2:15 "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
- If you need to quote Scriptures, be prepared to rightly divide it. That's Apostolic example.

What apt, and needful reminders.

There were a few occasions when I needed to remind a few "quoty" people that the Devil can quote Scriptures far better than they do, and I'm not the least impressed with the sound byte of their quotes!

Those who rightly divide the word of truth do impress me, and I'm thankful for each one of them. Thank you, Lord.

How many? AS MANY AS.

How many? AS MANY AS; not one more and not one less.

John 17:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to AS MANY AS thou hast given him.

Note the wonderful phrase, "as many as" - it means not one more and not one less!

Please note also that it is Christ Himself who freely and sovereignly gives eternal life, without any help from any man, to as many as has been given to Him.

THEREFORE, no amount of human endeavor will add one extra soul into heaven; and no human negligence will increase one soul in hell. If you don't agree with this, pick a quarrel with Christ's "as many as".

Rom 8:
29 "For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

As many as the Father predestinated unto eternal glory, the exact same number was given to Jesus Christ; and as many as was given to Jesus Christ, the exact same number was legally redeemed and justified on the cross; and as many as were legally redeemed and justified on the cross, the Spirit of Christ regenerates unto eternal life!

In saying the above, there will always be WILFULLY ignorant people who would accuse me of denying the place and usefulness of the gospel ministry.

But human endeavour will GREATLY affect the WELL BEING of God's children here on earth... Being grounded in the faith and walking in obedience to the Lord is HEAVEN on earth. Human endeavour is very important... but very important only in the sphere God has ordained it.

Negligence of duty will bring much misery, grief, and destruction here on earth. Negligence and carelessness leave God's children as babes, ignorant, tossed to and fro, in darkness... ah that is hell on earth!

Look at Lot... and those who made shipwreck of their faith!

Bro. Sing, John 17:2 has been a favorite of mine since we came into the church, and the way you explained it makes it very plain. Not one more, not one less will be in heaven to the Glory of God. Some talk of a limited atonement, truly, the manufactured religious way of "salvation" is much more 'limited' than the true way. Bow you head, and say this 'prayer' after me, all you have to do is 'accept' Christ. These are man's inventions, but this is what "mainstream" religion preaches.

Glenda Conner
Dont leave out the work of the Holy Spirit. He has to do the work.

Sing F Lau
Thanks for the apt reminder, Glenda.

God purposed eternal redemption for all elect.
Christ secured that eternal redemption for all elect.
The Holy Spirit applied that eternal redemption to each elect. Only applied, the child of God is fit for eternal glory.

Nothing else is needed for eternal glory.

The Holy Spirit dwells within each child of God, working in them to will and to do God's good pleasures.

But each child of God must respond obediently TO DO God's good pleasures for his timely well-being here in this present life, as he waits to enter his eternal inheritance.

His doing so will ensure his happiness and usefulness here.

His failure to do so will ensure his misery and fruitlessness and disgrace to the Triune who has redeemed him. And there are not a few like that among God's children!

The 1689 Confession of Faith : 31.1-3

The 1689 Confession of Faith
Study 40: Of Man's State After Death and the Resurrection (31:1-3)

Introduction
a. The last two chapters of the Confession deal with the subject of eschatology - ie. the doctrine of the last things; both chapters are identical to the WCF and the Savoy Declaration.
- The state between physical death and the general resurrection at the end of time is commonly referred to as the intermediate state; it is by definition, obviously, a temporary state. When a man dies he enters the intermediate state, with body and spirit separated, and remains there until the day of resurrection.
- Since this condition is not the final destiny of either the righteous or the wicked, it is called the intermediate state. The intermediate state is subject to immense changes during the general resurrection.
- It is after the resurrection that a man enters an eternally changeless and unchangeable final state.

b. The chapter summarizes the biblical teaching on the intermediate state by means of three all-important distinctions, i.e.

i. the distinction between the body and the spirit (soul) in the intermediate state, and
ii. the distinction between the righteous and the wicked in the intermediate state.
iii. The distinction between the just and the unjust in the final/eternal state.

c. Is man dichotomous (body and spirit) or trichotomous (body, spirit, and soul)? Please remember these things that will help us to understand the subject more precisely: let's look at a few relevant passages:
i. Gen 2:7 “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
- The body with the breath of life = a living soul. Man does not have a soul; he is a soul, a living soul when the spirit and the body are in union. A living man consists of a spirit and a body in union; a dead man consists of a body of dust only. The spirit is the breath of life breathed into him by God.

ii. Ecc 12:7 “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”
- The divine breath of life brought dust to life. When the spirit leaves the body, death occurs; if there is a distinct separate soul, where does it go?

iii. 1Co 6:20 “For ye are bought with a price: therefore, glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
- A man consists of a body and a spirit; the Lord redeemed them both. If there is a separate soul, is it purchased?

iv. 1Th 5:23 “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
- When the body and the spirit are united, there is a living soul; God preserves our soul (spirit and body united) when we are alive AS WELL AS when we are dead (body and spirit separated).- God is not the God of the dead but of the living; the whole man is a living soul, with body and spirit united.

v. The terms soul and spirit are used interchangeably in some passages of Scriptures; however, these do not negate the clear distinctions between them as indicated.

vi. Some defend the trichotomy, reasoning that since man is made in the image of God, therefore must be body, spirit, and soul since God’s is a Trinity! This idea is, at best, mere soundbyte and a travesty; at worse, wresting Scriptures.
- Man is made in the image of God in that there is PLURALITY of persons in the one man – the male man is distinct from the female man.

d. Your body and spirit are held together by the power of God; remember that too.
- Therefore, glorify your heavenly Father, and bless your Elder Brother Jesus Christ each day while your body and spirit remain united; they will soon part way for a while.

Paragraph 1. The bodies of men after death return to dust, and see corruption;1 but their souls, which neither die nor sleep, having an immortal subsistence, immediately return to God who gave them.2  The souls of the righteous being then made perfect in holiness, are received into paradise, where they are with Christ, and behold the face of God in light and glory, waiting for the full redemption of their bodies;3 and the souls of the wicked are cast into hell; where they remain in torment and utter darkness, reserved to the judgment of the great day;4 besides these two places, for souls separated from their bodies, the Scripture acknowledgeth none.
1 Gen. 3:19; Acts 13:36  2 Eccles. 12:7  3 Luke 23:43; 2 Cor. 5:1,6,8; Phil. 1:23; Heb. 12:23 4 Jude 6, 7; 1 Peter 3:19; Luke 16:23,24

1. Man enters the intermediate state at physical death (31:1a)
a. Death occurs when the spirit separates from the body.
i. Their bodies: 'The bodies of men after death return to dust, and see corruption...'
- “… for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” Gen 3:19b
- The bodies shall decompose and return to dust. Death is judicially imposed by God as the just and righteous wages of death. Gen 2:17 vs 3:14 – God’s “thou shalt surely die” versus the serpent’s “ye shall not surely die.”

ii. Their souls (spirits): “... but their souls, which neither die nor sleep, having an immortal subsistence, immediately return to God who gave them.”
- Negatively: the spirits neither die nor sleep: this repudiated the twin ideas of annihilation (cease to exist) and soul sleep (unconscious state)
- Affirmatively: the spirits have immortal subsistence (i.e. the state of remaining), so they do not die or sleep; like the bodies, the spirits return to their source, to God who gave them; from whence they had come.
- The spirits return to God who gave them to stand for judgment. Heb 9:27.
- There is judgment appointed for each man after his physical death; this judgment is according to works; this judgment determines when a man will spend his intermediate state, either in paradise or in hell.

b. The 1689 takes for granted the biblical view that man is dichotomous
Man consists of two, and only two, distinct parts, namely, body and spirit; man is both body and spirit in unity.
- The Bible teaches the nature of man as a unity, a living soul of body and spirit in union. Every act of man is seen as an act of the whole man. It is not the spirit but man that sins; it is not the body but man that dies; and it is not merely the spirit, but whole man, body and spirit, that is redeemed in Christ. cp Gen 2:7. 1Cor 6:20.

- It is the abnormality of death which most clearly reveals the dichotomy in man's constitution.
- The 1689 CoF takes for granted the origin of spirit in each individual person; it takes the biblical view that each individual soul is an immediate creation of God, owing its origin to a direct creative act. cf Ec 12;7; Isa 42:5; Zech 12:1; Heb 12:9.
- The spirit 'neither dies nor sleeps, having an immortal subsistence':  'immortal subsistence' means continues to exist or have being after the physical death. Physical death does not bring the cessation of the spirit; the spirit continues in a conscious existence after death.
- The spirits return to God for the purpose of it being assigned its preliminary/temporal reward or punishment during the intermediate until the final judgment on the resurrection day.

c. Death is a penal consequence of sin.
- As a penal consequence of sin, death is a perversion of God's created order, part of the ruin which man's rebellion made of God's perfect creation.
- As such, it is unnatural, and abnormal in the most precise sense of the word. Death is an evil thing. It tears asunder the body and the spirit that God has joined at creation. It is a complete contradiction of their created characters.
- Death is a radical and unnatural tearing apart of the spirit and body resulting in a decay and dissolution of the body and the nakedness of the spirit. Neither of them was ever intended to exist apart from the other.

2. The Condition of the Righteous in the Intermediate State (31:1b)
a. Their immediate entrance into this condition:
- There is NO interim period between death and the entrance of the righteous into paradise, the INTERMEDIATE state of blessedness.

b. Their perfect holiness in this condition:
- '... made perfect in holiness…'
- As to their moral and ethical state, the righteous are made absolutely sinless. Their spirits are made perfectly conformed to the perfect righteousness of God. Their bodies are still buried in corruption, dishonour, weakness. 1Cor 15:42ff

c. Their delightful circumstances in this condition:
- “… are received into paradise…” Paradise is the intermediate state for the godly, the rewards for the godly according to works.
- paradise: παρδεισος (paradeisos); heaven ορανς, ouranos. Paradise and heaven are NOT synonymous.
- 'Paradise' is the abode of the righteous during the intermediate state; it’s their reward for living righteously. Paradise assures us that the souls of the righteous are in an abode of blessed happiness.
- LISTEN UP: paradise is NOT heaven; stop being woolly!

 d. The blessed companion in this condition:
- '... where they are with Christ ...' Christ is omnipresent.
- The righteous will be in the presence of their blessed Lord and Saviour, the lover of their souls.

e. Their glorious privilege in this condition:
'... look upon the face of God in light and glory...'
- In a sense that no sinful mortal may, the souls of the righteous behold, and exist in the presence of the        manifested glory of God.

f. Their expectation of glorification in this condition:
- '... waiting for the full redemption of their bodies.'
- Great and manifold their blessings are, yet their blessedness is not yet complete.
- They wait for the full redemption of their bodies. For even the spirits in such a glorious state are incomplete and naked until clothed with their glorified body on the resurrection day.
- So, the intermediate state is distinctly different from the final eternal state in heaven itself;

3. The Condition of the Wicked during the Intermediate State (31.1b)
a. Who are the wicked spoken here: the ungodly children of God or the natural men?
- Their location: “… and the souls of the wicked are cast into hell…”
- The intermediate state of the wicked is a place that is entered by men and prepared for wicked men.
- And this place of conscious torment and misery is a place from which there is no escape until the general resurrection at the end of time.
- Hell must surrender and deliver up its captives (Rev 20:13-14) to Him who holds the keys of hell and of death, Rev 1:18

b. Their circumstances: “… where they remain in torment and utter darkness…”
- The condition is one of conscious torment and misery.

c. Their expectation: “… reserved to the judgment of the great day;”
- Hell is just an intermediate state, it lasts until the judgment of the great day, when it shall be determined whether they enter heaven or be cast into the lake of fire.
- Those whose names were written in the Lamb’s Book of Life shall be ushered into their eternal inheritance. The rest shall be cast into the lake of fire. (Rev 20:15)

4. The repudiation of other imagined alternatives (31:1c)
a. “… besides these two places, for souls separated from their bodies, the Scripture acknowledgeth none.”
- PLEASE NOTE CLOSELY, the Authors are speaking of “souls separated from their bodies” after physical death; the INTERMEDIATE STATE. The Authors are NOT SPEAKING of the eternal state of heaven or the lake of fire.
- These are the only two places – paradise and hell - during the intermediate state.
- What is implied all along is now stated explicitly. The RCC's heresy of purgatory is repudiated.
- There is no soul-sleep, no purgatory, or any other imagined alternatives.

Paragraph 2. At the last day, such of the saints as are found alive, shall not sleep, but be changed;5 and all the dead shall be raised up with the selfsame bodies, and none other;6 although with different qualities, which shall be united again to their souls forever.7
5. 1Cor. 15:51,52; 1Thess. 4:17   6. Job 19:26,27   7. 1Cor. 15:42,43

5. The Final Change at the Last Day (31:2)
a. The time of this final change
- “... At the last day...”: the day of Christ’s return at the end of the gospel age; it’s the last day, at the end of time.
- The final change will take place at the same time for all men, both the living and the dead, the righteous and the wicked.1Th 4:14ff.
- The various numbers of secret raptures of the saints propagated in Dispensationalism have no biblical basis; they are all fables of men and doctrines of demons. 2Tim 4:4.

b. The subject of the final change:
i. The saints that are living:
- “… such of the saints as are found alive…” Those saints that are living at the time of Christ’s return.
- “… shall not sleep, but be changed…”
- Without passing through death they will be transformed and receive the glorified body and existence. 1Th 4:13-17; 1Cor 15:50-53; 2Cor 5;1-4.

ii. All those saints that are asleep:
- “…and all the dead shall be raised up…” All the saints that are asleep/dead, without exception.

c. The character of the final change
- “… with the selfsame bodies, and none other…”
- “… although with different qualities,
- This statement involves a crucial biblical tension and balance. The resurrection body is the identical body which we now possess. However, it is this identical body with a difference. It is this body with different qualities... the old is transformed into the new. This is continuity as well as discontinuity.
- Read 1Cor 15:50-53.

- Therefore the resurrection body is a glorified physical body. A glorified body is not a non-material body!!

d. The permanence of the glorious change:
- “... which (i.e. the resurrected bodies) bodies shall be united again to their souls for ever.”
- The glorious change brought about by the resurrection (transformation in the cases of the living saints) is final and permanent. No further alteration in the physical or spiritual condition of any human being is conceivable after the final change wrought by the resurrection of the dead and the judgment.
- This marks the beginning of the state of eternity, the state of perfection and changelessness; this makes them fit for their entrance into their eternal inheritance. 1Pet 1:4

Paragraph 3. The bodies of the unjust shall, by the power of Christ, be raised to dishonour; the bodies of the just, by his Spirit, unto honour, and be made conformable to his own glorious body.
   Acts 24:15; John 5:28,29; Phil. 3:21

6. The Contrast in the Final Change (31:3)
a. The resurrection of the unjust
- “The bodies of the unjust shall…”
- The unjust are those not justified by God; these have not the righteousness of Christ imputed to them; they are still under the righteous condemnation of their sins. The names of these are not found written in the Book of Life.

b. The eternal destiny of the unjust
- “… by the power of Christ, be raised to dishonour.' cp. Dan 12:2; Jn 5:28-29.
- Christ holds the keys of hell and death, Rev 1:18. At Christ’s command, hell and death must deliver up those held captives in them, Rev 20:13. Christ will cast the emptied hell and death into the lake of fire.
- In the proper sense theirs is not a resurrection, a restoration to life, at all. Though they are raised physically, they are not raised to 'life everlasting', but unto 'death eternal'.
- Death is no refuge from divine wrath! Each unjust (not justified freely by God through Christ) will stand before the judgment throne.
- 'dishonour': the repulsive and loathsome nature of sin will be visible in the very bodies of the unrighteous.
- “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” Rev 20:15

c. The resurrection of the just
- “… the bodies of the just…”
- The just are those justified freely by the grace of God based solely upon the righteousness of Christ. These are the elect… Rom 8:29-30.

d. The divine agent of the resurrection
- “… by the power of Christ…”
- “… by his Spirit…”
- The unjust are raised by the power of Christ, the just/righteous are raised by His Spirit.

e. The eternal destiny of the just:
i. “…unto honour…”
- See the contrast in 1Cor 15 between the present body and the resurrection body.
ii. '... and made conformable to His own glorious body.' Rm 8:17,29-30; 1Cor 15:20-23,48-49; etc.
- Christ's resurrection body is the pattern for our own. O what a guaranteed hope of a glorious resurrection body.
