Things New and Old

Ancient truths revealed in the Scriptures are often forgotten, disbelieved or distorted, and therefore lost in the passage of time. Such ancient truths when rediscovered and relearned are 'new' additions to the treasury of ancient truths.

Christ showed many new things to the disciples, things prophesied by the prophets of old but hijacked and perverted by the elders and their traditions, but which Christ reclaimed and returned to His people.

Many things taught by the Apostles of Christ have been perverted or substituted over the centuries. Such fundamental doctrines like salvation by grace and justification have been hijacked and perverted and repudiated by sincere Christians. These doctrines need to be reclaimed and restored to God's people.

There are things both new and old here. "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things"
2Ti 2:7.

The fairness of the daughters of men and fairness of Sarah

Are you fair to the "fair" and "fair"?
Otherwise, try visiting a vanity fair when the weather is fair!

Beware of soundbyte.

Gen 6:2 “That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.”

Gen 12:11 “And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon.”

The above passages are the first and the second occurrences of the word “fair.” They are NOT from the same word, and they DO NOT have the same meaning. Check for yourself here.

The word fair in Gen 12:11 is translated from the Hebrew word, yapheh.

You can see that yapheh has a simple, narrow meaning: beautiful, the physical appearance. That’s easily understood; physical beauty is common concept.

The word fair in Gen 6:2 is translated from a different Hebrew word, towb.

You will notice that towb has a much broader meaning, including valuable (useful for a purpose), beneficial (useful for a purpose), fitting/appropriate (useful for a purpose…)

Gen 6:2 speaks of the fairness of the daughters of men, i.e. the FEMALE offspring of the procreating activities of mankind stated in Gen 6:1. In man’s procreation, sons and daughters are begotten. But the attention is turned to the female offspring because these daughters of men fit into the purpose of the sons of God in achieving their goal.

Those who want to make “the daughters of men” to mean ungodly women of the ungodly line need to square this idea with verse 1, making verse 1 to say that the ungodly men were multiplying and only daughters were born to them. Verse 1 is a general description of the procreating activities of mankind.

The fairness spoken of is true of ALL the daughters of men, whether they be physically beautiful, ordinary or even ugly, whether they be from the so-called godly line or the other line. It is obvious that the fairness spoken of here cannot refer physical beauty since this cannot be true of all the daughters of mankind.

Those who want to make “fair” to mean outward beauty need to conclude that this is true of all the female offspring of men, or all the ungodly women of the ungodly line were beautiful. It was as though tere were no beautiful women on the other side!

The fairness spoken of here is true of all the female offspring of mankind. Their fairness consists in their being FEMALE, have the reproductive capacity, thus valuable, fitting, beneficial, and useful for the purpose of the sons of God to multiply themselves through the daughters of men. That’s how the sons of God view the daughters of men – something fair, USEFUL for them to accomplish their purpose.

Gen 12:11 speaks of one singular woman Sarai, Abraham’s wife. The context is so plain that it refers to the physical beauty of a woman.
