"God elected us
and later calls us by the gospel. However, one needs spiritual life so he could
respond, and this is effectual call or regeneration."
The NEO Calvinists'
understanding of the effectual call is COMPLETELY OUT - and this is just a
factual statement.
It is a grievous
error to equate effectual call with regeneration! They are distinct. The former
is a broader term; the latter, more specific. A biblical distinction is the
essence of sound theology.
1689.10 Of Effectual
Calling
1. Those whom God
hath predestined unto life, He is pleased in His appointed and accepted time,
effectually to call,(1) by His Word and Spirit, out of that state of sin and
death in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ.
The effectual call
is the free and sovereign act of calling an elect out of his native state of
sin and death to that state of grace and salvation. And that act is ALWAYS
effectual - each one called is ALWAYS brought out of his native state of sin
and death to that of grace and salvation. AS MANY AS are effectually called by
God are also brought into a state of grace and salvation.
To call an elect out
of his native state of sin and death to that state of grace and salvation
REQUIRES these distinct activities of the Triune God: in this number and order:
- justification
(righteousness applied personally)
- regeneration
- adoption, and the
giving of the Spirit of adoption.
With this divine
work of calling an elect out of his native state of sin and death to that of
grace and salvation, the elect is perfectly fitted for eternal glory. Nothing
more is needed for his glorification.
It is also this
divine work of effectual calling that enables an elect to be called out by the
gospel. This DEFINITIVE sanctification (the ONCE FOR ALL separation from the
state of sin and death to that of grace and salvation by God's free and
sovereign grace) enables FARTHER sanctification by the gospel ministry.***
FARTHER
sanctification is needed for the well-being of God's children... DEFINITIVE
sanctification brought them in BEING as God's children.
And the above is
EXACTLY what the old school baptists believed.
Here's the proof.
1689.11 Of
Justification: "Those whom God effectually calleth, He also freely
justifieth... [effectually called >> justified]
1689.12 Of Adoption:
"All those that are justified, God vouchsafed, in and for the sake of His
only Son Jesus Christ, to make partakers of the grace of adoption..." [it
is obvious that regeneration PRECEDES adoption... made partakers of the grace
of adoption through regeneration. see next chapter.]
1689.13 Of
Sanctification: "They who are united to Christ, effectually called, and
regenerated [effectually called and regenerated...], having a new heart and a
new spirit created in them through the virtue of Christ's death and
resurrection, are also farther sanctified***...
So we have these
activities of God in the effectual calling:
justification
>> regeneration >> adoption + the gift of the Spirit of adoption.
All these WITHOUT
any regard to the gospel call. These make gospel call relevant, enable a child
[regenerated elect] to respond to the gospel call if there is any.
Neo Calvinists are
CONFUSED and MISGUIDED!
They have denied the teaching of Scriptures.
They have denied the
plain statements of their own doctrinal standards!
