Things New and Old

Ancient truths revealed in the Scriptures are often forgotten, disbelieved or distorted, and therefore lost in the passage of time. Such ancient truths when rediscovered and relearned are 'new' additions to the treasury of ancient truths.

Christ showed many new things to the disciples, things prophesied by the prophets of old but hijacked and perverted by the elders and their traditions, but which Christ reclaimed and returned to His people.

Many things taught by the Apostles of Christ have been perverted or substituted over the centuries. Such fundamental doctrines like salvation by grace and justification have been hijacked and perverted and repudiated by sincere Christians. These doctrines need to be reclaimed and restored to God's people.

There are things both new and old here. "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things"
2Ti 2:7.

A Still Small Voice - are we listening?

And Elijah HEARD the LORD's still small voice...
he heard it LOUD and CLEAR.

Brother Eng Sun led us in our worship; he exhorted us from 2Th 1:3 "We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth."

Look at the Thessolanian brethren, they were highly commended; their faith has grown exceedingly, and their mutual charity was abounding. They were also of flesh and blood just like us; they faced challenges and tribulations just like we do; yet, they made remarkable spiritual progress!

May the Lord bless and help us to do the same for the new year ahead of us. Let us not be distracted by the multitudes of things happening around us; lt us be focused on our calling, and be attentive to the still small voice of the LORD our God, to make spiritual progress. One of the chief reasons  - their words were aptly accompanied by their works of righteousness

It was his passing reference to 1 Kings 19 on "a still small voice" that particularly gripped my attention.

Have all the spectacular happenings around us - COVID-19, illegitimate backdoor government, the messy 2020 presidential election in the US, scandals, etc - caused us to be deaf to the still small voice of the LORD our God?

1Kings 19
11 ¶ And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:
12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
13 ¶ And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

Take note of the three dramatic scenes - the violent rock-blasting wind, the earthquake, and the fire - that naturally gripped our attention. But alas, it is repeatedly stated that "the LORD was not in the wind... not in the earthquake... not in the fire." Take careful note of this hard truth; the LORD was not in those spectacular things. Unfortunately, we are often obsessed with such dramatic phenomena.

However, the almighty LORD chose to be in a still small voice!

And Elijah HEARD the LORD's still small voice... he heard it LOUD and CLEAR. Then he gave careful attention to the LORD's specific instructions to him, and commanded him, "Go, return on thy way..." And Elijah obeyed, "So, he departed thence..."  These are the things that will help our faith to grow well!

O what precious lessons for us in this noisome world clamouring for our attention; let us battle against them from drowning out the still small voice of the LORD our God.

Help us, O LORD our God. Give us the spirit of Thy servant Elijah. Amen.
