Beware of Michal's syndrome, michalitis.
Let this be a solemn warning.
She is consistently described as Saul's daughter, and not King David's wife! 2Sam 6:16-23. "Michal Saul’s daughter looked through a window... And Michal the daughter of Saul came out... Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death."
What a tragedy! And why so? What's the message for you and me?
Beware of michalitis!
Casting aspersion on Michal is furthest from my mind... exhorting people to beware of Michal's syndrome is my only intent else we suffer the displeasure of the Lord who struck Uzzah dead, and shut the womb of Michal!
What was wrong with her; why was she only referred to as Saul's daughter?
Good question!
Surely there must be a theological reason... Perhaps this!
Saul was dead and gone, and Saul represented the old and the rejected. And identifying Michal as Saul's daughter repeatedly is ominous. It shows that Michal is identified with and remained in the past and obsolete... refusing to move on to the new. Sounds very much like the Jews of Jesus' time - incapable of rejoicing with the coming of the Lord's anointed!
This same disease is manifested with various symptoms:
- stuck in the old covenant laws, unwilling to move on into the new covenant laws...
- clinging on to the baggage of the old man instead of Christ command...
- loyalty to the old order over against the new order set before us...
- insisting on man's tradition against God's revelation...
Watch out... or you will suffer the heart wrenching barrenness in your life!
Move on into the joy of your new King Jesus Christ.
Things New and Old
Ancient truths revealed in the Scriptures are often forgotten, disbelieved or distorted, and therefore lost in the passage of time. Such ancient truths when rediscovered and relearned are 'new' additions to the treasury of ancient truths.
Christ showed many new things to the disciples, things prophesied by the prophets of old but hijacked and perverted by the elders and their traditions, but which Christ reclaimed and returned to His people.
Many things taught by the Apostles of Christ have been perverted or substituted over the centuries. Such fundamental doctrines like salvation by grace and justification have been hijacked and perverted and repudiated by sincere Christians. These doctrines need to be reclaimed and restored to God's people.
There are things both new and old here. "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things" 2Ti 2:7.
